CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In brief, estrangement means the fact of no longer being on friendly terms or part of a social group. It also means no longer being affectionate or being separated from your usual surroundings. It is therefore obvious that John Pepper Clark’s State of the Union and Tanure Ojaide’s Delta Blues and Home Songs portray estrangement, political, socio-`economic, religious and societal injustice in the poem under study.

Moreover, following the polluted socio-economic landscape in Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole, these poets have risen to the occasion by using their poetic works to address the abnormality of oil exploitation and also bring to the knowledge of environmental devastation and inhumanity.

These poets also expose social experiences; as a refraction of the totality of human experience in dealing with nature and the outcome of physical observation growing up in the Niger delta region of Nigeria. Undeniably, their poetic works engages in with his Eco-poetry that borne out of the harsh living conditions of the people in Niger Delta.

It is an incontrovertible fact that the Nigerian nation depends, in fact, survives, on the wealth of the oil-rich Niger Delta. The theme of estrangement in John Pepper Clark’s state of the union and Tanure Ojaide’s delta blues and home songs.

The poetry: State of the Union and Delta Blues and Home Songs are collections of poems that show how scholars on Niger Delta eco-poetry have concentrated on the economic, socio-political and cultural implications of eco-degradation in the oil-rich Niger Delta regions of the South-South in Nigeria and also addresses the trope of eco-alienation, the sense of separation between people and nature, which seems to be a significant idea in Niger Delta eco-poetics. Therefore, it is on this background that poetry in African literature has become imperative as a tool to foster change.

 

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, environmental problems are severe, particularly in the Niger Delta region of the country. In that region, crude petroleum activities damage the fertility of the soil, and destroy wildlife and the breeding ground for marine fishes because of the toxicity of oil and gas.

The various government programmes aimed at ameliorating their plight have failed due to inefficiency, bad leadership, exploitation and injustices in the Niger Delta that J.P Clark and Tanure Ojaide write in the two poems under the study. Therefore, these are what prompted the researcher to embark on this study.

 

 1.3 Purpose of the Study

This study examine the theme of estrangement in John Pepper Clark’s state of the union and Tanure Ojaide’s delta blues and home songs. Without reservation, Clark and Tanure use poetry to review the wickedness and evil practices in Nigeria and African society.

The purpose of this study shall then show the negative impacts of exploitation in African literature through poetry and how it destroys the lives, hope and dreams of the masses in particular and the society at large.

 

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant in the following ways:

Firstly, it will serves as a panacea to the prevalent problems of corruption, exploitation and despoliations and other vices in our society.

Secondly, it will boost other researchers to be acquainted with the use of poetry to reveal corrupt practices in African literature.

Furthermore, it will help adults, youths and young ones of the African society to know their rights and stand to it.

Also, it will reveal same of the corrupt practices in Nigeria.

Lastly, it will prompt Nigerians to refrain from the act of exploitation.

 

1.5 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine the theme of estrangement in John Pepper Clark’s state of the union and Tanure Ojaide’s delta blues and home songs. Specifically, the objectives of the research are:

  • to use poetry to mirror out some injustice practiced in our society,
  • to expose corrupt practices in African 1literature,
  • to analyze the effect of estrangement in our society as portrayed in the poems under investigations,
  • to create an awareness on the need to put a stop to such practices.

 

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of the study is wide. It will be determined by how effective or relevant apportion is to the study. The study will touch the mainline poem, i.e. area in which the topic is concerned. Therefore, the study is limited to two poetry work by John Pepper Clark’s State of the Union and Tanure Ojaide’s Delta Blues and Home Songs.

 

1.7 Research Methodology

The primary method is the use of J John Pepper Clark’s State of the Union and Tanure Ojaide’s Delta Blues and Home Songs. While the information from the library and other related source will be examined as secondary source.
