INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Without a doubt, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become, within the very short time, one of the basic building blocks of modern society, many schools now regard understanding ICT as part of the core of education, alongside reading, writing and numeric.

According to Ukpe (2021), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to various technological tools and resources used to create process, store, retrieve and also communicate and manage the information around the world. Indeed, those technologies include computers, internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and television) and telephone (Sharma, 2019).

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) include all the matters concerned with furthering of computer science and technology with the design, development installation and implication of information system and application (Brief, 2016).

Without a doubt, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are indispensable and have been accepted as part of the contemporary world especially in the industrialized societies. In fact, cultures and societies have adjusted to meet the challenges of the knowledge age.

Specifically, Information and communication Technology (ICT) is an aspect of human concept which transformed one from manual way of life to a more sophisticated, advance and science oriented knowledge applied in the daily undertakings for fast and effective performance (Sharma, 2019).

However, educators across Nigeria recognized that students must have good education that enables them to participate successfully in and contribute positively to the realizing of national objectives. Schools also are developing and implementing technology plans and investing in computers and other new technologies in particular, educators realize that computer networking offers flexible and powerful new ways to accomplish a range of goals in school.

Therefore, education has to be continuously preoccupied to create information, handling skills and abilities among the students and teachers so that they have improved methods of teaching and learning through the provision of the necessary facilities. Information and communication technology and the learning of biology among secondary school students. 

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in secondary schools has offered ample opportunities and advantages to education more people rapidly to improve efficiency, and to improve their academic performance in biology (Udofia, 2021).

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning is becoming wider in scope today to our schools nationwide. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is not only restricted to its usage as instructional materials in form of teaching aid but it has become a tool to reshape knowledge delivery and hence both teachers and students activities in the classroom (Sharma, 2019).

However, studies have shown that majority of students in secondary schools lack basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills. This is as a result of non-availability of these resources in secondary level of learning or inability of the schools to use these Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities. Therefore, based on this background, this study aimed to examine information and communication technology and the learning of biology among secondary school students.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

In this era of scientific and technological development, the standards of academic achievement in schools have been a matter of great concern to everybody. This is so because a lot of criticisms have been put forward on the performance of students in our public government schools in Nigeria. The general slogan associated with the educational system is the fallen standard of education.

Many science educationists have however conducted researcher on the school characteristics that affect achievements like quality of teachers, curriculum, and the use of instructional materials and location of schools. But little researches have been done on the Information and communication Technology (ICT) and academic performances of students in Biology. This is why the researcher is interested in examining information and communication technology and the learning of biology among secondary school students.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

This study examined information and communication technology and the learning of biology among secondary school students. Specifically, the objectives of the study are:

(i)      To find out the performance of students who learn Biology using computer and those who learn without the use of computer

(ii)     To find out the performance of students by gender who learn Biology using computer.

1.4    Research questions

The following questions were formulated to guide the study:

(i)      What is the mean difference in performance of students who learn Biology using computer and those who learn without the use of computer.

(ii)     What is the mean difference in performance of students by gender who learn Biology using computer.

1.5    Significance of the study

Firstly, the study will help the parents to take the initiative in providing their wards with information technology devices like computer that will help them improve their academic performance in Biology.

Secondly, the finding will help the students realize the importance of technology and motivate them to contribute their quota to the development of science and technology in Nigeria through mastery of computer and their applications in different areas of life. Information and communication technology and the learning of biology among secondary school students.

The findings will equally help teachers to realize the importance of information and Communication technology in delivering teaching and learning programs. Science concepts could be very difficult to teach due to complexity of diagrams, but with computer, Lucy could be presented using computer animation. Thus, they prepare and manage instructional materials using word processing packages Corel Draw and others.

It will also be of immense benefit to teach in colleges and tertiary institutions who are concerned with the training of teachers by pre-planning and reconstructing there training programmes to enhance effective teaching and learning of Biology in our secondary schools.

Also, to the educational administrators, planners and other educational bodies involved in the training processes, the findings will help them to know the value of information and Communication Technology (ICT) and apply same in the curriculum, for effective teaching and learning of Biology.

Finally, through the study, the students will be motivated since motivation is an important aspect of students learning thereby enhancing their academic performances in Biology.

1.6    Limitation o the study

In writing a research study like this, certain limitations are bound to occur. This include among others:

(i)      Firstly, the time given for the completion of this study was inadequate to make a research like this have a wide scope.

(ii)     Secondly, lack of finance

(iii)    Also, inadequate research materials and equipment

(iv)    Lastly, inadequate electrical supply,

The following will be taken as the definition to suit the purpose of this study:

ICTs: An acronym, for information and communication technologies.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. That the students who learn with the use of computer performance better than their counterparts, who are not opportune and exposed to the use of computer.
2. Male students do not differ from their female counterparts in performance Biology when computer is used for learning.
