CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background to the Study

Over the years many researchers recognize instructional researches as important variable in the teaching – learning process particularly at the lower level of education. This is so because the use of these resources in a lesson class enhances clarity of the subject matter among learners.

Instructional resources therefore represent all the materials (Print, and non-prints) used to support instruction in the classroom.

Most of these materials such as realize projectors television, computers, models etc. are standard material’s often produced abroad too expensive to be procured by education ministries and private school owners for use in the teaching – learning process.

Furthermore, researchers like Usman and Umerua (2023) decried the falling standard of mathematics education among pre-primary and primary school pupils which they attributed to inadequacy or outright lack of relevant teaching aids in most pre-primary and primary schools in Nigeria. Moreover, unless this situation is brought under control, the due expressed the fear that mathematics education will continue to experience a downward surge at the pre-primary level in particular and other levels of education in general.

 

The National Policy on Education (2014), emphasizes effective teaching of rudiment of numbers at this level of education as success or failure at the foundation level will affect learners performance in the correspondingly. Instructional material improvisation and academic performance of pupils in mathematics.

Usman and Umerua (2023) therefore opined that using the local materials to produce instructional materials for teaching and learning Mathematics will not only reduce the financial burden often associated with the procurement of standard resource materials but will also ensure availability of these instructional in schools.

This study will therefore examine instructional material improvisation and academic performance of pupils in mathematics, as well as find out the relationship between improvisation and availability of teaching resources for teaching and learning mathematics at the Early-Childhood Care Education level.

 

1.2   Statement of the Problem

Over the years the researcher observed that there is considerable lack or inadequacy of instructional resources for the teaching and learning of mathematics especially at the Early – Childhood Care Education Level. However, this condition is often attributed to the rising cost of these resources which usually manufactured abroad and imported into the country by government and private school owners.

Instructional resources like realize, television, projectors, Video tapes, and Computer tapes are getting too expensive of recent times consequently, many pupils learn mathematics without the use of instructional resources that could enhance pupils’ comprehension of the subject.

 

Many pupils therefore have been performing poorly in mathematics. This study therefore seeks to find out whether improvisation and usage of instructional resources could reverse this Ugly trend.

Any researchers in the past have made attempts at redressing the issue of poor status of instructional resources at various levels of education but without paying more attention to the issue of improvisation of these resources locally. This research work on “instructional material improvisation and academic performance of pupils in mathematics” is therefore an addition to the volume of work already done on related topics.

 

1.3   Purpose of the Study

This study aimed to investigate into instructional material improvisation and academic performance of pupils in mathematics. Specifically, the study seeks to;

(i)     Examine the relationship between availability of instructional material and pupils’ learning of mathematics

(ii)    Assess the relationship between improvisation and extent of availability of instructional materials for teaching and learning mathematics.

(iii)    Find out the extent to which the use of improvised instructional materials relates to academic performance of pupils in mathematics.

 

1.4   Significance of the Study

Research findings on the issue will be significant in the following ways:    

(i)     Firstly, it will serve as a reference manual for future researchers on related issues.

(ii)    It will also enlighten teachers on the importance of improvising instructional materials for teaching and learning of mathematics particularly at the Early – Childhood level of education. Instructional material improvisation and academic performance of pupils in mathematics.

(iii)    It will serve as a guide to government, school proprietors and other related agencies especially educational administrators when making policy statements on the supply of facilities to schools.

(iv)   It will also government when making decision concerning funding of schools and human resource development particularly in relation with the production of instructional materials.

 

1.5   Research Questions

In the course of carrying out the investigation on the issue it was pertinent to raise the following questions.

(i)     To what extent does availability of instructional materials related to pupils learning of mathematics?

(ii)    How does improvisation relate to availability of instructional material in mathematics?

(iii)    To What extent does utilization of instructional materials relate to academic performance of pupils in mathematics?

 

1.6   Research Hypothesis

Three null hypothesis were proposed to guide the study as follows.

(i)     There is no significant relationship between availability of instructional materials and academic performance of pupils in mathematics.

(ii)    There is no significant relationship between improvisation and extent of availability of instructional materials for teaching and learning of mathematics.

(iii)    There is no significant relationship between utilization of instructional materials and academic performance of pupils in mathematics.

 

Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Academic performance: this term is often used in educational instructions to describe the formative evaluation of pupils students ability in a particular subject or the summative assessment of pupils/students’ activities in the entire school.
  2. Instructional resources: In brief, this refers to all the materials/facilities often used in a lesson class to enhance instructions
  3. Improvisation: In brief, this term refers to the process of producing or manufacturing materials or facilities locally to replace the standard ones.
