CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Without reservation, to uphold the quality education delivery, educational facilities such as buildings, equipment, transportation, furniture, books, and utilities are used. It’s also worth noting that the supply, adequacy, use, and administration of these educational facilities have a big role in determining the quality and standard of a   learning institution.

Ahmodu and Sheu (2018) posit that there is an exigent essential provision for secondary school education. Also, considering the state school library and the mammoth cost of procuring new books, suitable time and ample upkeeping of the libraries should be paramount to school heads, stakeholders and other users of the school facilities.

Oyedeji (2012); Adamu, Okerele and Hamidu (2022) observe that with the recent population explosion secondary schools are not well equipped, and even those with facilities do not have an adequate number of facilitators. They also stressed that most classrooms are short of required facilities which makes teaching and learning at this level of education to be of low quality.

However, public schools have a poor maintenance culture, which means that school facilities are rarely maintained. One of the major issues impeding school facility maintenance culture was a lack of funding.

Despite its supply, according to  Akinsolu (2019), quoted  in Akinyemi (2020), educational curriculum cannot be sound and properly  run with inadequate and poorly maintained school infrastructure. As a result, school  facilities  have  been identified as a significant component in education, determining  to  a  considerable  extent how well any organization or system, particularly the educational  system, functions.

THE IMPACT OF MANAGEMENT AND PROVISION OF FACILITIES ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Facilities in schools are physical resources    that facilitate efficient teaching and learning, since their availability, adequacy, and relevance affect efficiency and high production, from all indications.

Specifically, senior secondary education represents a critical stage in a student’s academic journey, pivotal for future success and societal contributions (UNESCO, 2019). The quality of education at this level significantly hinges upon the interplay between effective management strategies and the provision of adequate facilities within educational institutions.

Educational management, encompassing administrative decisions, leadership effectiveness, and policy implementation, plays a fundamental role in shaping the learning environment (Bush, 2016). Additionally, the sufficiency and quality of facilities. Thus, including infrastructure, educational resources, and extracurricular amenities, significantly impact the overall educational experience and student outcomes (Lau, 2020).

However, while individual studies have recognized the importance of either management or facilities, a comprehensive understanding of their combined impact on the academic performance of senior secondary school students remains limited (Ravitch, 2017). There is a recognized gap in empirical research that explicitly analyzes how modern management practices and optimized facilities influence academic achievements in this educational context (Lau & Lee, 2018).

Furthermore, societal changes, technological advancements, and evolving educational paradigms continuously challenge traditional approaches to educational management and facility provision (Sahlberg, 2018). The dynamic nature of these influences necessitates a deeper investigation into how contemporary management strategies and improved facilities directly shape the academic achievements of senior secondary students. Understanding these dynamics holds significant potential for informing educational policies and practices (Fullan, 2014). It provides an opportunity for educational policymakers, school administrators, and stakeholders to devise evidence-based strategies and interventions that can enhance the learning environment for senior secondary students, thereby fostering improved academic outcomes and holistic student development. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the impact of management and provision of facilities on academic performance of senior secondary school students.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

It has been observed that there is a dearth of concern for school facilities in the study area, which has an undesirable impact on the teaching and learning process as well as the achievement of the educational goals. The public is an upheaval that senior secondary school students’ academic performance in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) is improving year after year. However, because the schools are inadequately equipped, the participants engaged in examination malpractices.

Moreover, despite the acknowledged significance of effective management strategies and the provision of adequate facilities in educational institutions, a gap exists in comprehensively understanding their combined influence on the academic performance of senior secondary school students. While individual studies have recognized the importance of either management practices or facilities. Therefore, there’s a paucity of empirical research that explicitly examines the interplay and cumulative impact of modern management strategies and optimized facilities on academic achievements in this specific educational context. Furthermore, with the evolving educational landscape, marked by technological advancements and shifting societal paradigms, the traditional approaches to educational management and facility provision may not adequately address the complex needs of senior secondary students. This necessitates a deeper investigation into how contemporary management strategies and enhanced facilities directly shape academic outcomes, considering the multifaceted nature of these influences.

The lack of comprehensive research in this area impedes the development of evidence-based strategies and interventions that could potentially optimize the learning environment for senior secondary students. Thus, a thorough examination of the relationship between management practices, facility provision, and academic performance is crucial to inform educational policies and practices aimed at fostering improved academic outcomes and holistic student development. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the impact of management and provision of facilities on academic performance of senior secondary school students.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that, this study highlights the critical nexus between effective management practices, facility provision, and the academic performance of senior secondary school students. The synthesis of empirical evidence underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of how modern management strategies and optimized facilities collectively impact academic outcomes in this educational context.

The identified gap in research emphasizes the urgency of further exploration to bridge the knowledge divide. By elucidating the nuanced interactions between management approaches, facility adequacy, and academic achievements. Therefore, this study lays the groundwork for informed policymaking and targeted interventions. Lastly, addressing this gap in understanding holds significant promise in enhancing the learning environment for senior secondary students. By leveraging insights gleaned from this study, educational stakeholders can collaboratively devise evidence-based strategies. Thus, that promote not only academic success but also holistic development among students in their crucial secondary education years.
