INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is the general sense covers the whole life of an individual from birth death or from cradle to grade that shows that education is as old as man on earth. The formal school system is greatly influenced in its result on the lives of all who pass through it. In Nigeria before the 1840’s there was in-existence in the system of education. Moreover, this was broadly traditional, occupationally oriented and informal apprenticeship system. This types of education as at that time was relevant to the needs of the society (Cole, 2016).

However, education is an important aspect of the education process. This is the stage at which the learner’s knowledge, skills ability and competencies are assessed, and judgment made about such performance. The out of such judgment is used for diagnosing as well as placement of students. Beating the due process of examinations leads to malpractices. Hence, examination malpractice is as old as examination itself. Curbing examination malpractices in secondary schools.

However, the rate at which examination malpractices occurs in the Nigeria educational system in highly disturbing and, therefore, needs prompt attention by all shareholders. In fact, the phenomenon has both moral and legal implications (Adegboye, 2018).

CURBING EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

In Nigeria school system, various forms of examination are noticed. These are the entrance examinations the terminal and promotion examinations, the senior school certification examination and the degree or diploma examinations.

Students are required to pass any forms of examination they partake in. but these days students now finds various means of achieving success in this examinations and one of such ways is by cheating in examinations through leakage of examination papers impersonations, external assistance, copying, smuggling of foreign materials, substitution of script and improper assignment (Olasinde, 2023)

Examination malpractices has become a nauseating phenomenon in the Nigerian education system, thus posing a great threat to the standard of examinations in Nigerian and the acceptability of  the worth of the certificates resulting from them. Curbing examination malpractices in secondary schools.

Furthermore, examination malpractice, according to Adedokun (2013), may be defined to include misconduct or any other act not in consonance with the rules and regulations guiding the examination with a view to obtaining good result by fraudulent means. Also, examination malpractice has been a cause of great concern to the society to the extent that there had to be an enactment of the examinations malpractice act 33 of 1999 to deal with its societal menace.

The West African examinations council also has kept yearly record cases of examination dishonesty to buttress prevalence in the polity.

However, since education is seen as the instrument that unlock the door of knowledge acquisition, it is necessary for all stakeholders of education and the government to design necessary measures to curb in examination malpractices in our society. It was based on this that the study was conducted to examine the various measures that should be taken in curbing examination malpractices in secondary schools.

1.2 Statement of  the Problem

The occurrence of examination malpractice at any level of educational stratum posses the greatest threat to the validity and reliability of any examination and consequently to the authenticity and recognition of certificate issued. The numerous examination malpractices among secondary school students over the years have become a growing concern since cheating is such a longstanding and global problem inherent by human beings. This examination dishonesty is a dangerous disease that affects our educational system. This is because it has been observed that every year when examinations result is release; there will be a mass failure in many school subjects. This is attributed to the fact that students are lazy, absent from school, truancy and lack of self- confidence in the examination hall which inform resulted to examination malpractice in our educational system.

Based on the above available fact, the researcher intends to investigate the possible measures that could be curbing examination malpractices in secondary schools.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study was to investigate the different measures of curbing examination malpractices in secondary schools. In specific terms, the objectives of the study are:

1. To examine the influence of teachers motivation in curbing examination malpractice in secondary schools.
2. To find out the influence of punishment in curbing examination malpractice in secondary schools.
3. To investigate the influence of supervisors in curbing examination malpractice in secondary schools.

1.4   Significance of the Study

The study of this nature will be useful to the following individuals: student, parent, teachers, and government as well as future researchers.

Firstly, it will help the student to be aware of the implication of involving in examination malpractice. The study will also help the government to implement a law to examination malpractice policy on the part of the parents. The findings of this study will serve as a pointer to the parents especially the educated parents to realize the examination malpractice is not effective means of acquiring school certificate. Furthermore, it will enlighten the teacher to know appropriate means adopted to minimize examination malpractice in schools.

The study is also expected to help school administrators and guidance counselors to curb or control cheating behaviour in schools. Finally, the findings of the study will serve as resource materials for future researcher who may like to carryout a study in similar topic.

1.5   Research Questions

The following research questions were formulated to guide the study.

1. To what extent does teacher’s motivation help in curbing examination malpractice in secondary schools­?
2. To what extent does punishment of offenders curb examination malpractice in secondary school?
3. Do supervisors of examination have any influence in curbing examination malpractice?

Definition of Terms

The following term that related to the research are:

Curbing: This refers to the act of eradicating or eliminating examination malpractice

Examination: In brief, this refers to an aspect of general evaluation processes, which aims at quality control and the improvement of our educational system.

Examination Malpractice: This is the misconduct or any other act not in consonance with the rules and regulations guiding examination with a view of obtaining good result by fraudulent means.

Secondary School: In brief, this refers to a school or learning environment responsible for the training of students from 10 to 18 years of age.

Conclusion

          Examination malpractice has become a hydra-headed problem that pervades the entire educational system in Nigeria. It is perpetrated by students and staff alike both within and outside the examination rooms using different techniques that grow by the day. The resultant effect is gradual loss of confidence in Nigerian Certificates. As such, the different measures of curbing examination malpractice should be one of the issues that should be addressed by the educational administrators both in the state and federal institutions of learning. Based on the specific objectives of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Teacher’s motivation is one of the ways of curbing examination malpractice in secondary schools.
2. Punishment of offenders should be one of the measures to curb examination malpractice in secondary schools.
3. Class tests and examinations should be adequately supervised by invigilators to check examination malpractice.
