INTRODUCTION

Entrepreneurship education holds significant promise for youth empowerment and economic development, particularly in Nigeria, where youth unemployment rates remain persistently high. With a population predominantly composed of young people, Nigeria faces the dual challenge of harnessing the demographic dividend of its youthful population while addressing the pressing issue of unemployment and underemployment.
However, according to recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate stood at 42.5% in the fourth quarter of 2020, highlighting the urgent need for effective strategies to engage and empower young people (National Bureau of Statistics, 2021).
In fact, entrepreneurship education has emerged as a key policy priority, with policymakers, educators, and development practitioners recognizing its potential to equip youth with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to succeed in the labor market and create their own opportunities.

Furthermore, in Nigeria, efforts to promote entrepreneurship education have gained momentum in recent years, with various initiatives aimed at integrating entrepreneurship into formal and non-formal education systems. For example, the Nigerian government’s National Policy on Education emphasizes the need to incorporate entrepreneurship education into school curricula at all levels, from primary to tertiary education (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013).
Additionally, organizations such as the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the Bank of Industry have implemented programs to support aspiring entrepreneurs through training, mentorship, and access to finance.
Despite these efforts, challenges persist in the implementation and effectiveness of entrepreneurship education programs in Nigeria. Limited access to quality education, especially in rural areas, remains a barrier for many young people, exacerbating inequalities in access to opportunities (United Nations Development Programme, 2020).
Moreover, there is a need to ensure that entrepreneurship education is culturally relevant and responsive to the needs and aspirations of diverse youth populations, taking into account factors such as gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic background.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of resilience and adaptability in entrepreneurship. Without a doubt, as businesses grapple with the economic fallout of the pandemic, entrepreneurship education must equip young people with the skills to navigate uncertainty, leverage digital technologies, and identify new market opportunities (Okafor, 2021).
Additionally, there is a growing recognition of the role of social entrepreneurship in addressing pressing social and environmental challenges, providing young people with avenues to create impact while generating sustainable livelihoods (Nigeria Economic Summit Group, 2020).
In light of these considerations, this study seeks to examine the implications of entrepreneurship education for youth empowerment in Nigeria, with a focus on skill acquisition, entrepreneurial intentions, and socio-economic outcomes. Therefore, based on this background, this study aimed to examine entrepreneurship education and skill acquisition implications for youth empowerment.
1.2Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Statement of the Problem
Present observations highlight persistent challenges in entrepreneurship education across Nigeria, despite increasing acknowledgment of its importance. Access to quality entrepreneurship education remains limited, particularly in rural and marginalized areas, leading to disparities in opportunity. Factors such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient resources, and a shortage of trained educators contribute to this accessibility gap.
Consequently, there is a risk of perpetuating inequalities, hindering social mobility, and impeding broader economic development initiatives.
Moreover, the existing entrepreneurship education curriculum in Nigeria often fails to address the evolving needs and aspirations of youth adequately. Indeed, it tends to prioritize traditional business models over emerging trends like social entrepreneurship and digital innovation. This narrow focus may undermine the relevance and effectiveness of entrepreneurship education, especially given the dynamic nature of the contemporary economic landscape shaped by technological advancements and changing consumer behaviors.
Additionally, ensuring inclusivity and gender sensitivity within entrepreneurship education remains a challenge, with young women facing unique barriers to accessing education and participating in entrepreneurial endeavors.
Furthermore, while entrepreneurship education aims to equip youth with the skills and mindset necessary for success in the labor market, current observations indicate a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding its long-term impact on youth empowerment and socio-economic outcomes in Nigeria.
While some studies suggest positive associations between entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intentions, the extent to which these intentions translate into sustainable business ventures and meaningful socio-economic contributions remains unclear.
Moreover, limited data availability on the employment and income trajectories of entrepreneurship education graduates hampers efforts to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Hence, addressing these gaps is imperative for formulating evidence-based policies and interventions aimed at maximizing the impact of entrepreneurship education on youth empowerment and economic development in Nigeria. Therefore, this study aimed to examine entrepreneurship education and skill acquisition implications for youth empowerment in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
