ABSTRACT

This research work examines Humiliation and social injustice in Athol Fugard’s Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and Ngugi Wa Thiongo’s The Trial Of Dedan Kimathi. In Sizwe Bansi is Dead the author portrays the problems experienced by the Africans during apartheid regime. It portrays the struggles of African to attain equal right and to be treated as human beings. The study shows that the black South Africa pass through oppression, humiliation and their rights were restricted because of lack of passbook and skin colour.

While in  The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, the author pictures a society with two classes of people- the rich and the poor people of Kenya, who suffered exploitation, disillusionment, oppression, humiliation, discrimination and dehumanization during and after colonialism.

In conclusion, the plays expose these social injustices and deprivations of the poor masses of their human rights by the whites. The study, therefore, recommends that the policy of racial segregation and other forms of inhuman treatments and oppression by the colonial masters should be aborted for the betterment of the blacks in South Africa.

Undeniably, African writers have always used their works to comment on current socio-political affairs and act as the mouthpiece of the downtrodden. Their works are stepped in as social issues that affect the poor masses, oppression, discrimination and disillusionment against the colonial masters during and after independence.

HUMILIATION AND SOCIAL INJUSTICE IN ATHOL FUGARD’S SIZWE BANSI IS DEAD AND NGUGI WA THIONGO’S THE TRIAL OF DEDAN KIMATHI

Indeed, this statement buttressed Chinua Achebe to said that “any African who tries to avoid the big social and political issues of contemporary Africa will end up being completely irrelevant like that absorb man in the proverb  who leaves his house burning to pursue a rat fleeing from the flames” (78).

In addition, in support of Achebe’s point of view, Ngugi in his critical work, Homecoming, posits that “literature does not develop in a vacuum.

In any case, it gives impetus, shape, direction and even area of concern by the social, political and economic forces in a particular society. He further states that the relationship between creative literature and other forces cannot be ignored especially in Africa where modern literature has grown against the gory background of European imperialism” (15).

Therefore, the above quotation has shown that Athol Fugard and Ngugi Wa Thiongo use their literary works in examining and portraying the evil which the whites have imposed towards the blacks. Thus, how they were oppressed, discriminated, dehumanized and disillusioned in their own land as seen in Fugard’s Sizwe Bansi is Dead. How passbook imposes limits on the employment and travels of all the black citizens in South Africa.
