CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The spate of anti-social behaviour among youths is on the increase, it is commonplace to read about brutal attacks by students on their teachers and or fellow student’s. Put differently, student apart from legitimate academic activities engage themselves in nefarious and nocturnal organization that have bizarre consequences on them and the society at large. Such incidents among many others depict the alarming rate at which discipline behaviour are on the decline among youths.
The existence of unwanted traits and tendencies like gangsterism, rape, examination practices etc among secondary school students is viewed with great concern. This is because the future of any society rests on this category of and on the school, which plays the role of a cleaning house for the preparation of youths for adults’ roles (Isangedighi, 2008).
Indeed, the existence of indiscipline behaviour among secondary school students has become a source of concern to parents, teachers, counselors, social workers, administration, and psychologist. Hence the need for the study.
Also, Owan (2006) defines school discipline as a form of discipline appropriate to the regulation of children and the maintenance of order in the school.
However, he further perceived academic performance in this study as the degree of achievement by students in their classroom lesson delivery, class assessment tests, beginning of term exams, midterm exams, terminal and national examinations. Thomas (2008) described performance as action of a person or a group when given a learning task in the classroom setting.
Furthermore, Maduakonam (2010) observed that, three types of misbehaviors which are regarded as indiscipline for the educators in the classroom include; misbehavior that inhibits the learner’s own learning, misbehaviors which are disrespectful, defiant or abusive to the commitments intentionally or un-intentionally.
In addition, he further stated in a clear term, some of these classroom misbehavior which he believes can impact negatively on the morale of the student himself and mentioned them as follows;
- A learner consistently comes to class late and disrupts the flow of the class.
- He/She is not listening and ask questions that have already been answered
- Some may be called out while class is on.
- Another one defies the teacher and refuses to follow instructions.
- Another one moves around in the class distracting others.
- He/she writes graffiti on the school properties.
The above stated characteristics are the classroom misbehaviors among the students during teaching and learning.
Moreover, according to Isangedighi (2008), discipline includes a branch of knowledge, training that develops self-control, punctuality, character, orderliness or efficiency, strict control or punishment and a system of rules and regulations. Obviously, good discipline is considered to be one of the major attribute of effective schools and classroom management and many failing schools have been blamed for lack of discipline (Ncharam, 2006).
Therefore, this background, the researcher therefore seeks to examine the influence of school discipline and classroom behavior during agricultural science lesson among secondary school students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
SCHOOL DISCIPLINE AND CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR DURING LESSONS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The problem of indiscipline in schools in a classroom setting has persisted over the years. There is no doubt that students indiscipline generally constitute a trait to effective teaching and learning in agricultural science.
Based on this backdrop, the researcher seeks to examine the influence of school discipline and classroom behavior during agricultural science lesson among secondary school students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study was to examine school discipline and classroom behavior during agricultural science lesson among secondary school students in Oruk Anam Local Government Area. Specifically, the study seeks to;
(i) examine the relationship between obedience to school rules and regulations among students and classroom behaviors during Agricultural Science Lessons.
(ii) examine the relationship between punctuality to school among students and classroom behavior during Agric. Science Lesson.
(iii) examine the relationship between regularity in school among students and classroom behavior during Agricultural Science lessons.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The importance of this study cannot be over emphasized. Firstly, the findings of this study would be beneficial to school headmasters, principals of schools. Also, policy-makers in the ministry of education, youth and sports, parents and other stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.
Secondly, the findings will be helpful to the Government in solving the escalating problems of indiscipline that are widely spread in most schools.
Thirdly, the study will help to provide a guide to head teachers and principals, not only secondary schools in Oruk Anam Local Government Area but other schools in Akwa Ibom State and beyond, on how to manage school rules and regulations.
Also, the findings will provide preventive measures against indiscipline among secondary school students in Akwa Ibom State. Finally, the study will serve as a spring board to every organization such as schools, churches, homes, and society at large.
1.5 Research Questions
- How does obedience of school rules and regulations influence the classroom behaviour of secondary school students during Agricultural Science lesion?
- How does punctuality to school influence the classroom behaviour of secondary school students during Agricultural Science lesson?
- How does regularity in school influence the classroom behaviour of secondary school students during Agricultural Science lesson?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
- There is no significant relationship between obedience of school rules and regulation among students and classroom behaviour.
- There is no significant relationship between punctuality to school among students and classroom behaviour.
- There is no significant relationship between regularity in school among students and classroom behaviours.
1.7 Limitation of the Study
The researcher had difficulty in administering questionnaire tagged “School Discipline and Students Classroom Behaviour (SDSCBQ), on the sample schools.
Also financial constraints exerted pressure on the study because the researcher found it difficult to get some funds to finance the study.
The period given for the completion of the study could hardly be enough for a wider and more in-depth research into the problem situation.
1.9 Definition of Terms
School Discipline: In brief, defined as the actions or training often used as a system of punishment, aimed at producing obedience to rules, self-control and skills.
Discipline: is defined as a training that teaches self-control, obedience, co-operation and punctuality. It is also the actions that facilitate the development of self-control, skills, responsibility and character.
Classroom Behaviour: This refers to the changes in students action and the ability to maintain good performance in the classroom learning environment.
Academic Performance: This is the level of knowledge or skill attained by students in a given subject usually measured by a test score, or examination grade obtained by students in the school.
School Rules and Regulations: It refers to the adherence to moral code of the school and conformity of students to obey.
Punctuality: refers to the ability of the student to be timely also doing the right thing at the right time.
Regularity: In brief, this refers to the gradual attendance in schools by students.
CONCLUSION
The spate of anti-social behavior among youths is on the increase. It is commonplace to read about brutal attacks by students on their teachers and fellow students, put differently, students apart from legitimate academic activities engage themselves in nefarious and nocturnal organizations that have bizarre consequences on them and the others depict the alarming rate at which disciplined behavior are on the decline among youths.
The existence of these unwanted traits and tendencies like gangsterism, rape, examination malpractices etc among students is viewed with great concern. The school played the role of “a clearing house of the society” for the preparation of youths for adult roles. Any nation that is interested in her youths, negligence of the level of discipline behaviour would amount to the nation to be likened to concrete structures on a weak foundation.
However, based on the findings of this study, it could be concluded that there is a significant/positive relationship between school discipline and classroom behavior during Agricultural science lessons among secondary school students in the study area.
