THE USE OF AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
THE USE OF AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1Â Background to the Study
In this age of science and technology, the importance of science education for accelerated development of a country is obvious. Without science and technology, the resource of a nation cannot be organized for accelerated development. More so, the wealth, influence and high grade of students’ performance to depend on the ability to a teacher and the learners to utilizes the available teaching materials and resources in the school (Agagan, 2023).
The exposure of students to Biology aimed at equipping them with the basic knowledge for sustainable manpower developmental need in a modern society. The use of audio-visual materials and academic performance in biology among secondary school students.
THE USE OF AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Ausubet (2015) recommended that, a very important variable which has direct bearing on instruction is the amount of instructional materials and resources available to the teachers and students.
Alcorn, Kinder and Schunert (2023), pointed out that, the amount of materials that can be recalled varies with the sensory stimulation emphasized during the process of learning. Instructional materials that stimulate both the auditory and visual senses simultaneously. Thus, without completely relying on either, belong to the group called audio-visuals. They include the television, audio-slide, audio-pictorials, and video-tape among others. Learners can recall 50% of what they learnt by hearing and seeing at the same time.
1.2Â Statement of the Problem
It has been observed that, while Biology remains one of the science subjects in secondary schools, the performance of students in examinations has not been very impressive. A lot of people have attributed the poor performance of students to a number of factors including the unavailability of instructional materials like audio-visual materials.
It is on this premises that the researcher is motivated to conduct a research on the use of audio-visual materials in teaching and academic performance in Biology among secondary school students in Udung Uko Local Government Area.
1.3Â Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to assess the use of audio-visual materials and academic performance in Biology among secondary school students. Specifically, the study sought to:
- Compare the academic performance of students taught Biology with audio-visual materials and those taught without audio-visual materials.
- Compare the academic performance of male and female students taught Biology with audio-visual materials.
1.4Â Â Â Significance of the Study
This research has a vivid significance, most importantly will bring to awareness the relevant infrastructure which has bedeviled the effective Biology teaching and learning. Consequently, it will make parents to see the need of providing audio-visual materials like television, computer video tape at home for use by their children.
The study shall alert the government on the urgent need to provide these materials to schools for effective implementation of the programme.
i      It will make teachers to be aware of the place of audio-visual materials in teaching and students academic performance in Biology.
ii      It shall also bring to the awareness of the teachers’ constraints in procuring and utilizing audio-visual materials. The use of audio-visual materials and academic performance in biology among secondary school students.
iii     Finally, the school of science in the College of Education and other tertiary institution will derive immense benefit accruing from this study.
1.5Â Research Hypotheses
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of
Students taught Biology with audio-visual materials and those taught without audio-visual materials.
- There is no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female students taught Biology with audio-visual materials.
Definition of Terms
Visual aids: These are devices that can stimulate the sensory mode of vision.
Audio-visual Aids: They are devices like televisions computers video games, audio- slide, audio pictorial etc, which appeal to the senses of hearing and sight.
Academic: It is education of a child being studied in school such as primary, secondary, college and university.
Performance: it is an action or achievement considered in relation to how successful a child was.
Biology: This is the scientific study of the natural processes of living things.
Conclusion
The art of meaningful learning is governed by the ability to understand. Although memorization is indispensable in learning process, retentive learning can be greatly enhanced and assisted by understanding which governs meaningful learning. In the teaching/learning process, the uses of materials have been very necessary in the promotion of meaningful learning.
The use of audio-visual materials like television has become very popular in science teaching as well as in the dissemination of scientific information to wider population. However, this study revealed that the provision of audio-visual materials at school promote academic performance of students in Biology.
