CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Indeed, every individual grows towards becoming functioning members of the society. Thus, in the process of growth he gains empowerment through school learning. Stakeholders in education industry such as government, parent, missionaries, and proprietors of schools had invested huge sum of money and materials to ensure high performance of student under their care (Bola, 2013).

Moreover, there has always been diversity in the learning process in computer science among student in secondary schools. While some student learns very fast, others do the opposite.

However, this failure in computer science has been attributed to some factors which include the different levels of intelligence, some socio-economic factors, the school environment, availability and usage of computer systems/accessories. Thus, the best approach to effect study of computer depends on the extent of the practical aspect of teaching computer, which has to do with the availability and the usage of this computer system/accessories.

Aneke (2015) Computer system is a programmable machine which responds to a specific set of instruction in a well defined manner, whereas computer accessories are parts or peripherals that makes up the whole component of the computer.

Therefore, it can execute a pre recorded list of instruction (a program). Indeed, the place of computer in education, like in any fields of human endeavor, has assumed an unimaginable dimension.

Without a doubt, computers are used in various ways for teaching and learning in schools at various levels. Specifically, computers can now guide a learner through a course of instructions at a video display unit in such a manner that will facilitate the understanding of subject matter.

However, this process helps to speed up the students learning process. This practice, unlike the case of human teacher gives the opportunity to re – learn any aspect of the subject matter as many times as he/she cleans it necessary. Thus, this process of learning is called computer – assisted learning (CAL).

THE EXTENT OF AVAILABILITY OF COMPUTER SYSTEM ACCESSORIES IN EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF COMPUTER SCIENCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Computer can also provide instructions to students, ask them questions (usually multiple choice questions) mark the students responses, grade their performance and determine by itself whether to take the students to take the students to next level of study or repeat the previous portion of the lecture just concluded based on the students performance. Certainly, this process of learning is called computer aided instruction (CAI). Apart from instructional programs, computers also make a lot of impacts in provision of educational materials.

Obviously, computer transform school libraries into new information service unit. Through virtual library one does not need to go from one library to another in search of library materials. Without reservation, with just a press of button (keys on computer keyboard) or a click on the mouse the information will be at the disposal of the intended user.

Furthermore, according to Aneke, (2015) accessories are those devices which are useful, helpful to the operation of computer. E.g. keyboard, scanner, printers, mouse, monitors etc. Undeniably, the extent through which these accessories are seen in the lab is the major aim of these studies. Unavailability of computer systems/accessories is of the problem facing Nigerian students in Akwa Ibom state and Nsit Ibom in particular.

In this sense that students hardly make use of the system due to non availability of these accessories in their schools.  Therefore, these computer systems/accessories must be available and used for the effective learning and teaching of computer science.

1.2 Statement of problem

The continuous records of students poor attitudes towards the study of computer science is a serious problem in the Nigerian educational system, mostly especially at the secondary level. However, many factors have been blamed for this, among these are the unavailability and usage of computer systems/accessories.

Therefore, it has become a great concern for researchers, educators and all education stakeholders over the years. It has been observed that students usually failed in examination owing to improper teaching methods and lack essential teaching material delivery (Afolabi, 2017), the act of teaching is fundamentally concerned with passing ideas, and attitudes from the teacher to the learner.

Furthermore, in Nigeria, experience has shown that spoken words alone in the communication are grossly in effective and insufficient in producing a desired learning outcome.

Therefore, it was on this background that the researcher was interested to carry out the research study in other to determine the need for the availability and use of computer systems/accessories in the teaching and learning of computer science in secondary schools in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.

1.3 Purpose of the study

Generally, this study is to examine the extent to which the availability and usage of computer systems/accessories affects the effective teaching/learning of computer science in senior secondary schools in Nsit Ibom local Government Area.

Specifically, the study sought to:

  1. Ascertain the availability of computer systems/accessories for effective teaching and learning of computer science in secondary schools.
  2. Examine the extents of the usage of computer system/accessories in the teaching and learning of computer in secondary schools.
  3. To ascertained the extent of usage of computer system/accessories in learning computer in secondary school.

1.4 Significance of the study

The findings of this study will be of benefits to students, teachers, and educational administrators. The students may stand to benefit when the computer system and their accessories are available in the lab for practical in order to enhance effective teaching and learning.

The teachers work will be made easier when instructional material are adequate and upgrade following stored information in the computer.

Also, this results will be of benefits to educational administrators to achieve their objectives which is to set-up computer study at the secondary school level as to well as devising clear strategies and technologies to be used by the federal and state government in introducing computer education in Nigeria.

1.5 Research Questions

In other to achieve the derived objective the following research questions were raised to guide the study:

  1. To what extent are computer systems/accessories available for the teaching/learning of computer science in secondary school?
  2. To what extent are the available computer systems/accessories utilized in the teaching of computer of computer science in secondary schools?
  3. To what extent are the available computer system/accessories utilized in the learning of computer science among secondary school students?

1.6 Limitations to the study

In conducting a research study of this kind, there are bound to be some challenges. Thus, some of the challenges encounter in the course of this study is as follows:

  1. Time constraint: time duration allowed for the completion of this research work could not be enough for the research to have a wider scope. Hence some schools were sampled and student out of all the schools in the area.
  2. Financial problem: this constituted one of the major limitations to the researcher especially as the researcher had to source for relevant materials on the topic and visit the sampled schools under the investigation for data collection.
  3. Insufficient references materials: this also was a problem as the researcher needed enough relevant literature on the topic.

1.7 Delimitation of the Study

This study was meant to examine the availability and usage of computer systems/accessories for effective teaching and learning of computer science in senior secondary schools within Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Computer: In brief, it is the electronic device that accepts data as an input and processes them electronically to produce the desired output or information with the aid of a set of instructions.

Accessories: In brief, these are those computer devices that are useful, helpful to the operations of the computer.

Program: In brief, a program is a set of instructions that informs the computer on what to do and how to do that.

Software: In brief, this is a collective term that refers to a group of related programs that directs the computer on what to do and how to do such a thing.

Hardware: Is a collective term that refers to all the physical components of the computer that can be seen or touched.

Peripherals: Are the computer devices that are connected to the central processing unit via cables or cords.

Teaching: Refers to the process of delivering of instruction and information to a learner for the purpose of deriving specific objectives.

Availability: In brief, this refers to the extend of which a particular facilities or resources are made reachable and provided for use.

Usage: In brief, this simply refers to the possibility of individual to make use of resources or facilities at their disposal.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the application of computer in the teaching and learning process makes the learning environment interesting and accommodating for the learners. From the result obtain in the study, the researcher makes the following conclusions; that the availability of computer/accessories influences the teaching/learning of computer science in secondary school; also the usage of computer/accessories influences the teaching/learning of computer science in secondary school.
