CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Chinua Achebe and Akan Essien are creative writers whose sensibilities in their writings have been awakened by inequalities and injustices done by the Nigerian political leaders in today’s contemporary society. Essentially, these writers through their writings reflect on the effects of socio-economic and political milieus that will and had characterized the present Nigeria’s situation that is full of corruption, conflict, oppression.

As visionery writers, they are able to reveal in their wittings that, in years to come, politics will become family inheritance, where a brother will wants a brother to inherit and take after him or her. These writers also proposes that the Nigerian society will never progress if corruption, nepotism, discrimination and bias rule is not put to an end by this selfish political leaders whose aims and objectives are to gather for their selfish interests and to the welfare of their families and friends.

THE CREATIVE WRITER AS A VISIONER IN CHINUA ACHEBE’S A MAN OF THE PEOPLE AND AKAN ESSIEN’S DIALOQUE OF ANGELS

More so, Chinua Achebe and Akan Essien as visionery writers proposed that, a time will come when unnecessary killings, kidnappings will become the order of the day. Class stratification and poverty will dominate the society; the poor will becomes poorer while the rich in hierarchy will continue to live luxurious life, with high level class inequality as examined in the two selected books, with a vivid picture on the suffering of the poor masses; sympathize with them on the wretched of the Nigerian society.

Their writings also paint a critical picture of the low classes of people in the Nigerian society, how these poor go through afflictions of the political leaders like the senators, bourgeois class who holds them responsible for the inherent exploitation, oppression and dehumanization in post-colonial Nigeria.

The writer’s environment also constitutes a major determining factor that influences what he/she writes for. This is seen in the writing of Etherton who stated thus: It is a shift from the re-creation of oral tradition in dramatic terms to the re-creation of a past contained in written histories. It is concerned with the colonial period and also with the immediate pre-colonial period and with those one powerful and extensive African empires (65).

From the foregoing, the importance of African oral tradition cannot be over emphasized. Many African writers unlike Chinua Achebe and Akan Essien have used their literary writings to unravel extensively the transformational vision of the neo-colonial African society they found themselves through their literary works. The creative writer as a visioner in Chinua Achebe’s a man of the people and Akan Essien’s dialoque of angels.

In the same vein, these writers also expose the social-economic factors which have disrupted the development of Africa and the gradual degeneration of Nigerian society as a result of bad governance, massive corruption, political instability and insecurity in their creative works.

In many African countries, as examined in Achebe’s A Man of the People where corruption and misapporpertion of funds are the major issues confronting the Nigeria society and Africa as a whole. Their creative works discuss the theme of corruption, this corrupt practice eventually led to the civil war in Nigeria as earlier predicted by Achebe’s A Man of the People where Nigerian politicians are prone to corruption and mismanaging of government funds for their personal use.

This consequently makes Emenyonu to opine that:  ‘‘the corruption in high places was a kind of boomerang. It became a count force that shattered all the strategies and idealism of the suffering masses and indirectly overthrew the higher-ups eventually’’ (4).

From the foregoing, Chinua Achebe and Akan Essien have explored various literary trends as it relates to issues in Nigeria. In addition, they have succeeded in extricating themes common in different countries; more is meant to be done in view to fixing the problems intrinsic in many parts of Africa.

Finally, their literary writings bring to the notice of the literary community on the emergence of new voices in the twenty-first century in African literature. It is on the appraisal of this crisis of political orientation among Nigerian leaders that formed the background to this research in the investigation of the creative writer as visioners in the perspectives of Chinua Achebe’s A Man of the People and Akan Essien’s Dialogue of Angels.

The creative writer as a visioner in Chinua Achebe’s a man of the people and Akan Essien’s dialoque of angels.

As visionery writers, their various thematic preoccupations explored in their works, performs educative roles by the arrangement of the social, cultural viewpoint and values of  the society which they do in the most efficient and convincing manner. Achebe in A Man of the People portrays the thematic pre-occupation as the failure of post-independence Nigerian politics and by extension Africa in general.

These writers therefore pin-point the evils done by many Nigerian politicians through their literary works and how they deliberately exploit, oppresses, and dehumanizes the poor masses.

As influential and Visioners, they forecast that class struggle will not be easily preventable in Nigeria until democratic principles, human rights, equity and justice are imbibed: “Until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, until the colour of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes, until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race, the dream of lasting peace remain but a fleeting illusion.
