INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Without reservation, the quality of teaching depends on love, dedication and devotion of the teacher towards the subject. Undeniably, the quality of any teaching program cannot rise above the quality and character of its teacher. In fact, it is the teacher who is responsible for influencing a students’ learning of the subject (Oyem, 2020).
However, character can be positive (value) or negative (prejudice) according to Baird (2022). Also, it is the framework of social psychology as a subjective or mental preparation of action. Indeed, it defined outward and visible posture and human beliefs.

Without a doubt, the character of a teacher will be determined by what that teacher will see, hear, think and work or do. Unquestionably, they are rooted in experience and do not become automatic routine conduct. Thus, it means that teacher prevailing tendency to respond favourably or unfavourably to an object (person or group of people, institutions or events) (Baird, 2022).
Moreover, effective study of the teachers’ characters towards learning cannot be overemphasized in order to combat with the present fallen stand of education in the country (Ololulehi (2017).
Indeed, the failure of students in economics over the years has only been attributed to the bad character of teachers towards the subject. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in economics among secondary school students.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Due to the present poor performance of students in Economics and the fallen standard of education at large, it is quite problematic for education researchers to predict the possible solution to this issue. However, it is obvious that most of the economics students are only bear the name without having and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills which they supposed to acquire at their level.
Moreover, all those default has always been accredited to students alone without considering the second party being the teachers. It is therefore to this and that this research seeks to investigateteachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in economics among secondary school students.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is on teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in economics among secondary school students. Specifically, then study seeks to:
(i) Examine the influence of teachers’ qualification on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(ii) Examine the influence of teachers’ teaching experience on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(iii) Ascertain the influence teachers’ competency and learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the purpose of the study, the following research questions were stated as below:
(i) To what extent does teachers’ qualification influence the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students?
(ii) How does teachers’ teaching experience influence the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students?
(iii) To what extent does teachers’ competency influences the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Based on the research questions set above, the following Null hypotheses were formulated as follows:
(i) There is no significant influence of teachers’ qualification on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(ii) There is no significant influence of teachers’ teaching experience on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
(iii) There is no significant influence of teachers’ competency on the learning effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Students.
1.6 Significance of the Study
(i) Firstly, it will enable teachers to adopt a more human character that will enforce learning effectiveness.
(ii) This work will go a long way to help our college of Education, Nigerian University’s and other higher institutions as to improve their curriculum in order to graduate teachers with good characters.
(iii) It will also serve as a guide-line to serve teachers who is already undergo character reformation. Teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in economics among secondary school students.
(iv) It will enable the teachers to exhibit good attitude so as to boost the academic performance and effectiveness of his or her students.
(v) Moreover, it will help the government at large to solve the present challenges in Nigeria Educational Sector.
Operational Definition of Terms
The following terms are defined operationally:
Characteristics: In brief, this is the description of human behaviour. This behaviour can be positive or negative.
Effectiveness: In brief, this is the act of producing a successful result or outcome.
Learning: This is one of the major skills in learning study. In any language, learning consists of grasping meaning through the written medium.
Teaching Experience: This can be seen as a period of direct personal participation of a teacher in teaching profession.
Teachers Qualification: This refers to credentials of a teacher earned from an authoritative source such as the government, a higher education or a private source which gives a teacher authorization to teach in primary, secondary and higher institution, etc.
Teacher: This is a person who has acquired enough knowledge through training to be able to import knowledge to the learners (students & pupils).
Teachers competency: Teachers competency is the ability, intelligence and charismatic processes with which a teacher impact on the students.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the success of students in the learning effectiveness at school depends largely on the characteristics of the teacher who handled such students. Thus, the effect of one’s learning effectiveness in school is very crucial and cannot be undermined. Teachers’ characteristics and learning effectiveness in economics among secondary school students.
Hence, based on the result and findings of this study, it could be concluded that characteristics adopted by the teacher have a significant effect on their learning effectiveness in Economics among secondary school students.
