CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the study

As Nigeria enters the 21st first century, considerable attention supposed to be focused on education as a key to sustainable development peace and stability. It is such recognition that makes education an indispensable means for effective participation not only in the socio-economic development of Nigeria but also in the rapid globalization (Oscar, 2017). In fact, it is an understatement to say that the standard of education in Nigeria has fallen (Akpan 2021).

Indeed, education system is the only instrument a society can use to equip all its people to lead productive public and responsible personal lives according to their talent and interest. Without reservation, education system must be such that gifted individuals have full opportunity to develop their skills, it must give scope for the creation of a progressives and democratic society (Wilyat 2019).

Consequently, this cause Akinboye (2023) to observe that the quality of education that we impart to our pupils and the priority to which we give it contribute largely to the formation of all attitudes they carry over into public Cofe.

 

STUDY HABIT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS

Indeed, whatever kind of seed we sow in the classroom, the manner in which we nurture it and the strength which the young one imbibe at the various stages of growth will determined the harvest that the nation will reap in the form of its educated youth coming out of the schools, Colleges and Universities.

 

Furthermore, the imprints of these institutions of learning will become indelible marks clearly visible in all fields of our National life. This means that the huge budgetary allocation spent yearly on education by all tiers of government, amount of time spent and educational planning and programmes would not be wasted away by young one refusal to learn but get involved in examination to copying and use other authorized means of passing examinations would not be retain in our society by fraudulent means is a problem in our society. Thus, this problem is persistent in our educational system and is eating into the fabrics of our societal life.

In addition, it seems that the reading culture is no more associated with the young one in educational system. Hence, it is this problem that the researcher wishes to investigate as it appears to be one of the root causes of the dwindling standard of our educational system. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate study habit and academic performance in mathematics among primary school pupils.

 

1.2 Statement of the problem 

The problem of poor performance of pupils in both internal and external examinations has attracted serious criticism and complaint from parents, education authorities and the government for a long time now.  Pupils performance in mathematics generally is not encouraging.

The sad news is that for a number of years now, these has been the concern of teachers, parents, groups and government about the dwindling performance and is not portraying our nation well before the committee of nations. Therefore, based on the above problem the researcher showed interest and commitment to investigate study habit and academic performance in mathematics among primary school pupils.

 

1.3  Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to investigate study habit and academic performance in mathematics among primary school pupils. Specifically, the study attempts to:

  • Examine whether poor study habits has influence on academic performance of primary six pupils in mathematics.
  • Examine whether sex has influence on study habit of primary six pupils.
  • Suggest ways of eradicating poor study habits among pupils in primary schools.

 

1.4 Significance of the Study

(i)    This study on study habits and academic achievement will be useful to pupils, parent, school administrator and government in the following ways:

(ii)   Firstly, they study will cause the parents rude their children in school with educational reading materials.

(iii) Secondly, the study will be of benefit to the government on it encourage government to see the used to stock the libraries with current books and help to bring back the reading culture. Study habit and academic performance in mathematics among primary school pupils.

(iv) Furthermore, to the school administrators the study will help them to provide good and conducive environment that will be encourage for the inculcation of good studying habit.

(v)   Lastly, this study will help the pupils to see the need to form good reading habits as there is nobody who can succeed academically without mating good use of his/precious time to study.

 

1.5 Research Questions

The following research questions were asked to guide the study:

(i)    How does poor study influence pupils academic achievement.

(ii)   To what extent does sex influence study habits of primary school pupils?

 

1.6 Research Hypotheses

(i)    There is no significant relationship between poor study habit and pupils academic achievement.

(ii)   There is no significant relationship between sex and study habits of pupil’s primary schools.

 

Definition of terms

The following terms are given operational definitions as used in the study.

Study Habit: In brief, it is the process in which an individual develop god study skills to acquire knowledge for academic success.

Mathematics: The term mathematics refers to one of the core subject in our school curriculum which has to do with logical manipulation of numbers and variables.

Academic Performance: In brief, this is measured as the capacity of a learner in terms of the attainment, in qualitative for specified learning objectives in a given curriculum.

 

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study, the following were established as conclusion:

(i)    Firstly, there is a high correlation between pupils study habits and pupils academic performance.

(ii)   Secondly, there is significant difference in the study habits of primary school pupils male and female these differences in the study habits are attributed to the fact that pupils do not adopt effective study method in their early life.

(iii) Lastly, lack of proper study habits is one of the root causes of our dwindling educational standard.
