CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Mathematics is seen by society as the foundation for scientific and technological knowledge that is vital by societies worldwide. Moreover, Mathematics is a science of number, size and shapes concerned with logical deduction from general areas of all reasoning with a wide application in life. (Anthony & Walshaw, 2019), as cited in Mensah (2023) this does explain, why mathematics is a compulsory subject fro all students who go through primary and secondary education in most counties, mathematics is therefore and important subject at these levels of education.

Mathematics is also used by Universities, Polytechnic and Colleges of Education to select secondary school student for entry into science-based degree programmes, mathematics and statistics and Nigeria Certificate in Education (N.C.E).

STUDENTS CHARACTERISTICS AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

The personal characteristics of students such as sex, age and attitude might affect the way a student learns and his/her capacity for learning. Osigale (2041) as cited by Chukwudi, personal communication, 4, July, 2017), opined that, the lack of interest among students towards the study of science discipline subject such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, has also contributed to the poor performance of students and his/her learning. According to John (2014) as cited in (D. Chukwudi, personal communication, 4, July, 2017), certain kinds of students lack of interests in schools precludes their learning as well as the learning of others.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

Mathematics as the bed rock of all scientific and Technological advancement is a compulsory subject in secondary education.

Mathematics is a human invention, borne out of human mind, a resolve to solve human problems. Thus as a creation of mind, it is concerned primarily with ideas, process and reasoning of all the factors that affect teaching – learning in the educational system of any society, teaching method seem to constitute the primary issue the teaching methods in use in many schools such as lecture methods, demonstration method, and discussion method among seen not to have brought about an effective teaching – learning, and, could have resulted in students ‘poor achievement in WAEC and NECO Examinations’. Students characteristics and learning of mathematics among secondary school students.

Hence, the need to adopt a better teaching method that would positively influence candidates’ achievement especially in mathematics. Therefore, the problem to be investigated in this study posed as questions are: would students improve upon their learning in mathematics if gender choices are made more freely today? Also, what is the relationship between family background on students learning of mathematics?

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine students’ characteristics and learning of mathematics among secondary school students in Abak Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

Specifically, the study is aimed at determining whether;

  1. Boys and girls of senior secondary school differ in their learning of mathematics
  2. Family background influence senior secondary school students learning of mathematics.

1.4    Research Questions

The following research questions were raised to direct the study:

  1. To what extent do boys and girls differ in their learning of mathematics?
  2. To what extent does family background influence the learning of mathematics?

1.5    Research Hypotheses

To answer the research question posed, the following hypotheses were formulated to direct the study.

  1. Boys and girls do not differ significantly in their learning of mathematics
  2. Family background does not significantly influence the learning of mathematics.

 1.6    Significance of the Study

It has been observed that student’s characteristics play vital roles in their learning of mathematics. The result of the findings will be o significance as follows:

  1. Firstly, it would guide and direct students to participate in things that are necessary for academic purposes.
  2. Secondly, it would enhance teacher awareness of their responsibilities and help adjust properly their relationship with students to enable them develop interest in the learning process.
  3. Furthermore, the study will be of great benefit to parents as it will keep them abreast of acceptable study habits for their children. Students characteristics and learning of mathematics among secondary school students.
  4. Lastly, it would help career advisers in guiding students on realistic and meaningful academic matter.

1.7    Assumption of the Study

This study is based on the following assumptions:

  1. The questionnaire outcome will depend seriously on the honest reactions of the respondents.
  2. The emotional state of the respondents can hardly be adequately as curtained.
  3. Students’ characteristic and learning of mathematics are measurable.

1.8.  Scope of the Study

This study is restricted to senior secondary two (SS2) students in the study area. The study is equally limited to only the conceptual variables gender and family background as they influence student learning of mathematics.

1.9    Limitation of the Study

Two limitations that the researcher encounters during the research work include:

  1. Since the sample respondents were drawn from some selected public secondary schools in Abak Local Government Area, the effects that were found will reflect the situation in the Local Government Area. Hence, the findings may not be representative of all secondary schools in Abak. Students characteristics and learning of mathematics among secondary school students.
  2. Secondly, resources (time and funds) were other limitations of the study. Inadequate time and funds for the progrmme hindered the extension of the research to other parts of the Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. But this study optimized those available resources.

Conclusion

Based on the results and findings of the study, the following conclusions were reached:

  1. Boys and Girls of senior secondary schools do not differ significantly in their leaning of mathematics.
  2. Family background does not significantly influence students’ learning of mathematics.
