CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In brief, waste can be refer to as any unavoidable material resulting from domestic activity or industrial operation for which there is no economic demand and which must be disposed of.

Specifically, with the reference to The United Nation Statistic Division (UNSD): Wastes are material that are not prime products (that is products produced for the market) for which the generator has no further uses in terms of his/her own purposes of production, transformation or consumption, and of which he/she wants to dispose.

Moreover, In Nigeria, 25 million tonnes of public solid waste are generated annually. 60% of wastes collected in Nigeria are organic waste and only 8% are recovered for refuse (Victor and Choji 2006).

 

The increasing level of solid waste generation and its management is becoming a serious problem in urban cities of the country (Nest, 1991). High population growth rates and increasing per-capital income have resulted in the generation of enormous amounts of solid waste, posing a serious threat to environmental quality and human health (Uchegbu, 1998 and Ekweosor, 2005).

Urban solid waste includes garbage or refuse discharged from residential, market, institutional and industrial activities.

However, the quantity of solid waste generated depends on a number of factors such as food habits, standards of living, economic status and the degree of commercial activities.

 

Moreover, in of Majidadi Ward like most developing parts of the country, wastes are commonly dumped in open dumpsites, uncontrolled landfills where waste collection service is organised by the state government or burnt in any available open space within the neighborhood of residential areas.

 

Geographical information system (GIS) is a digital database management system designed to manage large volumes of spatially distributed data from a variety of sources. They are ideal for advanced site-selection studies because they efficiently store, retrieve, analyse, and display information according to user-defined specifications. GIS has been extensively used to facilitate and lower the cost of the landfill site-selection process.

Manual methods adopted for analysis of many factors would be a lengthy and tedious work. GIS is used in this study to create various maps, data analysis and spatial distribution of dumpsite maps. GIS is a fundamental part of modern geography and it is extensively used by environmental planners. Spatial analyst tool of ArcGIS software has been used to locate waste disposal sites.

Statement of the Problem

Most uncontrolled dumpsite is many years old, having grown over time from small dump to large of unmanaged waste site. Majidadi Ward is not exceptional. Uncontrolled dump have significant environmental impacts in the area. As the waste decomposes, it poses health hazard to those living around it due to the location of some of the dumpsite. Thus, which are not convenient. It create leachate (a mix of toxic and non-toxic liquid and rain water). Which may get into the local water supplies and contaminate the drinking water.

Uncontrolled dumps also release gases that are explosive and flammable. In Majidadi Ward, wastes burned at the dumps, pose a direct safety threat because of the danger of explosion. The air pollution created by burning, harms the local community. Improper waste disposal also produces greenhouse gases (GHGs), which contribute to climate change.

In contrast, properly designed, constructed, and managed landfills aim to prevent or minimize health and environmental impacts. They have liners and leachate collection systems that protect groundwater, and gas collection systems that contain or safely burn methane from landfills.

 

Significance of the Study

This study will be useful to policy makers such as the Taraba State Urban Development Board as well as Taraba State Environmental Protection Agency and other non-governmental organisations. It will reveal the problems of these refuse dumpsites to these bodies so that solutions can be found. Also, this research work will be helpful for future researchers who will carry out similar research as this.

 

Scope of the Study

This research study is centred on spatial distribution of dump sites and how it affects human health. It is primarily centered on location of public solid waste (refuse) disposal in Majidadi Ward. It does not involve the chemistry of waste treatment, recycling and any other means of waste management.
