INTRODUCTION
1.1Â Â Background of the Study
The family lays the psychosocial, moral and spiritual foundations in the overall development of the child. Moreover, over the years, the investigations of the factors that influence academic excellence of students have attracted the interest and concern of teachers, counselors, psychologists, researchers and school administrators (Wiseman 2015). Thus, this is because of the public outcries concerning the low standard of education in the country (Umoge, 2022).
The declaiming quality of education in the country and breeding of graduates with little technical knowhow has resulted in serious setback to the industrial development of the nation (Ajila, 2014).
SINGLE PARENTING AND STUDENTS SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT
Furthermore, Element (2019) have attributed the called of poor academic performance to a contribution of persons and situational factors. Also, according to him, personal factors relates to the individual’s intellectual ability and knowledge capacity while situational factors are family or parental and societal influence.
In addition, Sketch (2016) identified and categorized problems responsible for students poor social adjustment and performance to problems of teachers, inadequate facilities in schools, problems caused by students themselves, parents and the society, governmental policies and finding of educational sectors.
However, according to Ajila and Olutara (2017) the state of the home affects the individuals. Since the parents are the first socializing agents in an individual life. This is because the parental attributes and variable in turn increase the awareness of the child towards the environment and learning.
Much has not been reviewed on social adjustment in schools as it relates to parental factors such as simple parenthood due to lessons such as divorce, separation or death of a parent hence this research on single parenting and students social adjustment.

1.2Â Â Statement of the Problem
The home environment or family has been revealed as having a lot of significant influence on both student social adjustment and academic performance. However, it has been observed that parent’s constant disagreement in home affects children emotionally and this could lead to per social adjustment.
Structurally, a family is either broken or impact, a broken family in this content is one that is not structurally in talk for reasons such as death of a partner (parent), divorce or separation. This analysis becomes necessary because is a simple parent family can be stressful for both the child and the parent.
Hence, such families are faced with the challenges of diminished financial resources and when a single parent is over burdened by responsibilities and emotional reaction to situations, they often becomes irritable, inpatient and insensitive to their children needs, (Nzewuawae, 2015). It is therefore against this background that this study was conceived to investigate single parenting and students social adjustment.
1.3Â Â Purpose of this Study:
The general purpose of this study was aimed to investigate single parenting and students social adjustment in secondary schools. Specifically, the study also sought to find out:
- How the following causes of single parenthood influence students social adjustment
- Death of a parent
- Divorce
- Separation
The study significantly aimed at finding out the possible academic outcome of students raised by simple parents and that raised by two parents family.

1.4Â Â Research Questions
The following research questions were raised:
- Is there any significant effect between single parenting and student’s social adjustment?
- To what extent does death of a parent, divorce or separation influence student social adjustment?
- Is there any significant difference in the performance outcome of students raised by a single, parent and that raised by a single parent?
1.5Â Â Research Hypothesis
               The following hypotheses were raised for testing:
- There is no significant relationship between single parenting and students social adjustment.
- Death of a parent, divorce and separation does not significantly influence students social adjustment.
- There is no significant difference in the performance outcome of students raised by a single parent and that raised by both parents.

1.6Â Â Significance of the StudyÂ
This study will be of immense significant to parents as it reveals the effects and causes of single parenting on the student or child social adjustment and academe performance.
The teachers will also benefit from the research as the findings will be used to bridge the between the homes and effective teaching and learning in the classroom.
The study will also show case possible solution to the problems of single parenthood.

Operation Definition of Terms
Single: This is an act of being left alone or an article used to describe a personality or one thing. But in the context of this research it is referring to either a mother or a father.
Parent: In the context of this study, it is referred to both the mother and father of the child that take up the responsibility of raising the child and giving proper education.
Social Adjustment: In brief, this is connected with the society or environment in which one finds himself or herself. But in the context of this study, it is the possibility of always identifying with other persons or people at all times.
Conclusion
From the above study, it may be concluded that:
- Firstly, single parenting influence student social adjustment in that such parent go through much stress, by raising children alone.
- Secondly, dual parenting styles enhance student good development with reference to the measures of discipline employed by both parents.
- Apart from single parenting, there are other factors that can influence development such as:
- Also, socio-economic status of parents
- Family size and background
- Lastly, parental educational attainment.
