CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Nigeria has been comically referred to as the only place on the glob where questions are answered with another question. Indeed, funny as it may sound, this typically describes the Ibibio speaker of English attempt at achieving communicative prominence in spoken English. However, we hear such responses as ‘Did I mention red Corolla?’, ‘Did he say he was buying a car?’ or ‘who talk about a green Venza?’ to a question like ‘He owns a blue Corolla, doesn’t he? Consequently, the reason for these multiple response is that communication has not been achieved.
PROBLEMS OF ACHIEVING COMMUNICATIVE PROMINENCE IN SPOKEN ENGLISH OF IBIBIO LEARNERS OF ENGLISH
Specifically, one aspect of effective communication is that a speaker must observe the norms and underlying rules that guide every communication.
These norms and rules govern how communicative prominence is achieved and turn taking in communication as well as how utterances should be interpreted. Furthermore, Sperber and Wilson (1995) argue that what is required in effective communication is mutual manifestoes. In fact, no meaningful interpretation of a communication can be achieved if the speaker does not initiate and formulate language symbols such that the listener can interpret in accordance with culturally determined understanding what these symbols mean (Ibe-Bassey 2000).
Often, people bring to bear their feelings, attitudes and other emotional overtones when they communicate. Without reservation, these features are usually private and required giving prominence to the actual intended meaning which is over and above the meaning of the words and sentences.
Therefore, to get at meaning, the speaker and listener require more information than the unmarked linguistics items provided. It therefore shows that communicative prominence in spoken English is often achieved through accentuation where emphatic stress is given to the linguistic item that carries the meaning to be given prominence.
It is on the foregoing critically formed the background to this research work examined the problems of achieving communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio learners of English.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
It global knowledge that , when people are able to achieve effective communication they start to demonstrate increased self-confidence and continue to perform better in their endeavours than those who are unable to achieve effective communication. Moreover, the federal government of Nigeria’s Universal Basic Education program, through SUBEB, requires the introduction of the four kills of language in Primary and Junior Secondary school English studies to ensure proficiency in the use of the language.
In fact, training and education in speaking and reading provide the lead for inculcating the required culture for proficiency in the use of the language for effective communication vis à vis communicative prominence.
However, achieving communicative prominence in spoken English is a big challenge to Ibibio speakers of English. Undeniably, effective communication is hindered and punctuated with numerous questions seeking to understand what has been communicated.
In addition, Oper and Oguzor (2011), observe that the crusade to universalize basic Education and improve its quality is now on the agenda of many countries including the developing ones like Nigeria. Thus, this source proposed that to improve the students’ achievement that may require inquiring teaching practices, which facilitate teaching for meaningful learning. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the problems of achieving communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio learners of English.
Â
 1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to examine the problems of achieving communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio learners of English. Specifically, the research aims to achieve the following objectives:
- to investigate the challenges towards the achieving communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio as second learners of English in Secondary Schools.
- to investigate the factors affecting communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio as second learners in Secondary schools.
- to find out the solutions to the problems of achieving communicative prominence in spoken English among Ibibio learners of English in Secondary Schools.
1.4 Research QuestionsÂ
The following research questions were formed to guide the study:
- What are the challenges towards the achieving of communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio as second learners of English in Secondary Schools?
- What are the factors affecting communicative prominence in spoken English of Ibibio as second learners in Secondary Schools?
- What are the solutions to the problems of achieving communicative prominence in spoken English among Ibibio learners of English in Secondary schools?
1.5 Significance of the Study
As a language researcher and teacher, the researcher considers it worrisome that the communicative competence of the learners of English as a second language is waning, especially in our own environment.
However, the present worrisome state of the general performance of the speakers of English in Nigeria is the overriding motivation for this study. The results of this research will be relevant to the teaching and learning of English as a second language, both in Primary and Tertiary institutions.
Whenever language learning is mentioned, teaching is implicated. This study will also be significant in two important ways – to the teachers and speakers of English as a second language. Not only will the best learning strategies be examined, those of teaching will equally be highlighted because the two are always simultaneous.
When this is done, the teachers may be better placed to choose the strategies or methods that would help them achieve their learning objectives better and faster.
Also, this study will in turn give the reader of this research and to the learners the holistic knowledge they need to acquire to build their communicative competence and perhaps enhance their communicative performance. Very importantly, this research will particularly be relevant to curriculum developers as it may help in suggesting the relevant activities, lessons and exercises to be built into syllabuses to ensure that the set objectives are achieved.
