CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Without reservation, curriculum are hard for some students and for some others easy and poor in content. This has lead to educational quality reduction. In today competitive world, social and economic successes are dependent on educational development and training of human resources in higher level so that they can meet needs.

Hence, to improve education, it is necessary to address students’ academic performance, factors affecting it as one of the educational system component to suggest required mechanisms for improving it (Zbeng, 2023).

Undeniably, problem solving strategies is one of the factors that attract attention of scholars. Problem solving strategies are considered as matching individual differences with ways that people prefer to plan and focus on their activities in order to reach the awareness, to generate ideas and to prepare for the tasks (Okeke, 2017).

To deal successfully with the problematic situations, it’s very effective to be aware of individual factors because they are closely related to how an individual views the world and how to respond to stressful situations and factors. However, natural state of a person towards change management and problem solving mostly in sciences (Biology) is affecting partly by his or her thought desire to participate in the respond to an emerged situation and attitude. The problem solving strategies and secondary school students academic performance.

In any case, theoretical foundations of understanding problem solving styles in biology are based on psychological type theory; learning style theory and cognitive style theory with research focus on creativity, creative productivity and instructing teaching of creative problem solving (Okeke, 2023).

However, each of them is studying problem solving styles from their own view. Form the cognitive perspective; problem solving is a personal-cognitive and innovative process that helps a person to develop effective and useful strategies to solve their everyday problems by using them.

PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Specifically, four activities are related to this component: problem definition, developing alternative solutions, decision making and implementation to the work. Thus, each of four steps has a great role in developing an effective response to the problematic situations. According to Sakiyo, and Jebson (2023) there are six styles or strategies of problem solving situations they are; creative problem solving, confidence, approach, helplessness, control and avoidance strategies.

Nevertheless, creative problem solving strategies involves planning and considering various solutions depending on the problematic situations. Confidence problem solving strategies represent one’s belief in one’s self ability to solve problems.

Approach problem solving strategies shows a positive attitude toward and desire to tackle problems. Helplessness problem solving style shows being an alone person facing a problem. Control problem solving strategies refers to external and internal controller in dealing with problematic situations. An avoidance problem solving strategies refers to avoiding problems instead of solving them.

Long and Casidy (2018) defined problem solving strategies as a process of cognitive development. Problem solving approach varies according to the level of the learners.

Problem solving varies also in various fields and by different people and thus the result obtained in the laboratory cannot necessarily generalized to problem solving strategies had a role to play in the academic performance of biology students and their successes. But researchers on problem solving in other field of sciences had been fascinating and this interest the researcher to analyze deeply on the role of it in the attainment and comprehension of biology lessons in senior secondary schools.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

Without a doubt, every year the three tiers of government in their budgets give the highest consideration to education in a bid to improve the standard of education and students academic performances.  Thus, the federal and state government places a high premium on the education of its citizens. The problem solving strategies and secondary school students academic performance.

Undeniably, the academic performances of students have been far below expectation. A lot of factors have been advanced to be responsible for the negative downturn. Some people attribute the negative downturn to the method of teaching such as problem solving strategies, this interest the researcher to find out how problem solving strategies affects students academic performance in Biology.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the extent to which problem solving strategies influence students academic performance in biology in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. Specifically, it is stated below:

  1. Compare the academic performance of Biology students taught with problem solving strategies and those taught without problem solving strategies.
  2. To compare the problem solving ability between male and female counterparts in Biology in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

1.4    Significance of the Study

This study will be of benefit to students, teachers, other researchers, society and the government.

Firstly, for student, the study will improve their academic performance and successes in biology

Secondly, for teachers it will help them to adopt a teaching method that will raise the academic performance of the students positively.

Thirdly, it will serve other researchers as a guide into similar research

Also, to the Society, it will expand the education level of the society

Lastly, it will help the supply of adequate facilities that will facilitate learning and bringing about effective outcomes.

1.5    Research Hypotheses

To guide the study, two research hypotheses have been formulated thus:

  1. There is no significant difference between students taught with problem solving strategies and those taught without problem solving strategies in biology.
  2. There is no significant difference between male and female students taught with problem solving strategies.

1.6  Delimitation of the Study

The study was restricted to Problem Solving Strategies and Secondary School Student’s Academic Performance in Biology in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

1.7    Limitation of the Study

This study was limited to time and financial constraints to complete the case study in all the selected secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

1.8    Operational Definition of Terms

Problem Solving: This is a method of teaching which consists of using generic methods in an orderly manner for finding solutions to problems.

Academic Performance: In brief, this is the result obtained from students through test and examinations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the study has carefully investigated the influence of problem solving strategies on the academic performance of secondary school students in biology. It is ascertained by this study that the students taught by problem solving strategies perform better than those taught without problem solving method. Also the males outperformed the females in their academic performance by problem solving methods.

The nature of the questions, the mode of teaching, the instructional facilities and materials had influence on students’ academic performance because these can or otherwise cheapen on curiosity of students as well as inculcate their new mode of thinking, learning enquiry and creativity and these enhance good academic performance. The problem solving strategies and secondary school students academic performance.

Most Nigerian students perform poorly due to the method of teaching used by the teacher. Therefore, both the students and teachers should facilitate learning. The appropriate teaching method should be used by the teacher for effective outcomes and feedbacks from the students.
