CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

This research intent assesses the relationship between learning skills and students academic. This chapter includes background of the study, statement of the problem, general objective, specific objectives of the study, research questions, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope of the study, and definitions of terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

In brief, learning Skills refers to an individual’s preferred way of processing new information for efficient learning. Rita Dunn described the concept of learning Skills as “a unique way developed by students when he/she was learning new and difficult knowledge”.

Indeed, learning skills is about how students learn rather than what they learn. Obviously, the learning process is different for each individual; even in the same educational environment, learning does not occur in all students at the same level and quality.

However, research has shown that individuals exhibit different approaches in the learning process and a single strategy or approach was unable to provide optimal learning conditions for all individuals. This may be related to students’ different backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses, interests, ambitions, levels of motivation, and approaches to studying.

Without reservation, to improve undergraduate education, educators should become more aware of these diverse approaches. Learning Skills may be useful to help students and educators understand how to improve the way they learn and teach, respectively.

Determining students’ learning Skills provides information about their specific preferences. Understanding learning Skills can make it easier to create, modify, and develop more efficient curriculum and educational programs. It can also encourage students’ participation in these programs and motivate them to gain professional knowledge.

Therefore, determining learning Skills is quite valuable in order to achieve more effective learning. Researching learning Skills provides data on how students learn and find answers to questions.

Learning skills are the plans or the techniques a learner implores to achieve the desire learning outcome and to maximize his or her  learning process. It is of no doubt that many educationists, parents, teachers and even the learners are wandering on how to improve learning strategies.

Many parents are worried about increasing wastage of resources as the learn outcome of their children are not improved. Parents improved learning strategies in order acquire improved learning strategies in order to prevent academic failure.

It is important to note that not only and frustration to the individual learner. It also affects the society in terms of manpower needs for technological development (Eneh and Etokebe, 2006). Learning skill may be described as either bad or good. Bad learning skill makes the process of acquiring knowledge, skills and ideas very rigorous. They tend to waste the learners’ energy, effort and time.

Learning Skills are an individual difference factor that represents enduring and stable approaches to processing information (Snyder, 2000). Although there are several conceptual models of learning Skills, we adopted Schmeck, Ribich, and Ramanaiah’s (1977) model. Because it identifies learning strategies that are likely to enhance learning and academic achievement from the framework of effective information processing. This model adopts the view that memory is a by-product of careful thinking and depth of processing (Craik & Lockhart, 1972).

In addition, rather than attempting to classify learners into mutually exclusive categories, this framework suggests that students tend to adopt either agentic/shallow processing. (with the performance goal of doing well on a test) or reflective/deep processing (with the mastery goal of deep understanding and long-term retention).

However, learning skills preferences are influential in learning and academic achievement, and may explain how students learn. Morever, previous studies have demonstrated a close association between learning Skills and academic performance. Therefore, learning Skills have been identified as predictors of academic performance and guides for curriculum design.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Considering the potential problems encountered in the secondary education of government students in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, determining the learning Skills of Government students may enable the development of strategies to improve the learning process.

However, the poor achievement of students in school examinations has worked against the realization of the goals and objectives of the learning process. Hence, the premises on this study “Learning Skills and Students Academic Achievement in Government in Nsit Ibom Local Government to determine whether learning Skills of students could affect academic achievement in Government.

1.3 Research Objectives

1.3.1 Main objective

1. The main objective of this study is to assess learning skills and academic achievement of students in Government I Nsit Ibom Local Government Area.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

1. To examine the relationship between Critical Thinking learning skill and students academic achievement in Government.
2. To examine the relationship between Collaborating learning skill and students academic achievement in Government.

1.4. Research Questions

1. Is there any significant relationship between learning skill and students’ academic achievement in Government?
2. To What extent does critical thinking relates to students academic achievement in Government?
3. Is there any significant relationship between Collaborating learning skill and student academic achievement in Government?

1.5. Research Hypotheses

1. There is no significant relationship between learning skill and students’ academic achievement in Government.
2. There is no significant relationship between critical thinking and students academic achievement in Government.
3. There is no significant relationship between Collaborating learning skill and student academic achievement in Government.

1.6. Significance of the study

This study on learning skills and students academic achievement will have numerous significance as follows.

• Firstly, the study will be helpful to the students and teachers as it will make them to be aware of more learning skills
• Secondly, it will assist the guidance counselors to provide educational assistance to the students with respect to learning skills.

• Thirdly, it will make useful suggestions that will help in limiting student’s poor academic achievement in the learning process.
• Also, the findings of this research work will be of immense benefit to the learners on the approach they adopt in learning government.
• Lastly, the research findings will bring about improvement by adding to the body of existing literature on the efficacy of these learning strategies in relations to students academic achievement in Government.

1.7  Definition of Terms.

Learning Skills: In brief, learning skills is a term that describes the tasks involved in learning. Including time management, note-taking, reading effectively, study skills, and writing tests. In other words learning skills are set of skills used in the process of acquiring new knowledge, typically in a classroom setting.

Academic Achievement: In brief, academic achievement is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals. Completion of educational benchmarks such as secondary school diplomas and bachelor’s degrees represent academic achievement.

Students: In brief, student is primarily a person enrolled in a school or other educational institution and who is under learning with goals of acquiring knowledge, developing professions and achieving easy employment at a particular field.

Critical Thinking Learning Skill: In brief, critical thinking skills allow you to understand and address situations based on all available facts and information. Typically, using critical thinking at work involves processing and organizing facts, data and other information to define a problem and develop effective solutions.

Collaborating learning Skills: In brief, collaborative learning is the educational approach of using groups to enhance learning through working together. Groups of two or more learners work together to solve problems, complete tasks, or learn new concepts.

School: In brief, a school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers.

Conclusion

Learning skills are the personal efforts or methods adopted by students to acquire knowledge, skills ideas and competence in learning. Some students who have good learning strategies do not spend a lot of time studying before they can achieve examination success.

Students who study very well without utilizing good learning strategies might still end up making little or no progress in their academics.

Based on the findings, it was concluded that learning skills such as critical thinking and collaborative learning skill affect the academic performance of students in Government in Secondary Schools as students who adopt these learning skills performed academically better than those who neglect these learning skills in Government in Secondary Schools.
