CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

The use of media to enhance teaching and learning complements traditional approaches to learning. Effective instruction builds bridges between students’ knowledge and the learning objectives of the subject. Moreover, using instructional media engages students, aids student retention of knowledge, motivates interest in the subject matter, and illustrates the relevance of many concepts (Oshodi, 2019).

However, as observed by Schramm (2017), instructional media includes all the materials and substantial resources that an educator might use to implement instruction and facilitate students’ achievement of instructional objectives. This may include traditional materials such as chalkboards, printed material (handouts, books, worksheets), display board charts, slides, overheads, real objects, and videotape or film, as well as newer materials and methods such as computers, real objects or models, DVDS, CD-ROMs, interactive whiteboard, the internet, and interactive video conferencing etc. it facilitates learning or increase understanding of material and enhances comprehension of the learners.

Furthermore, according to Azikiwe (2017), instructional media cover whatever a teacher uses to involve all the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste which presenting his/her lessons. However, in similar vein, Adegun (2022) says instructional media are things which are intended to help the teacher to teach more effectively and enable the students to learn more readily.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA UTILIZATION AND TEACHING OF BIOLOGY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Instructional media are information carriers designed specifically to fulfill objectives in a teaching-learning situation. They are very important in the teaching of science subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, because they facilitate the direct association between listening and understanding. They help to vividly illustrate meaning of things because they are associated with materials used by the teacher to improve the quality of his teaching.

However, the common objectives of instructional media can be grasping attention, sprouting interest, support learning with living examples and visual elaboration, making a learning environment in class. It also helps in turning learning of Biology an enjoying experience. Using instructional media prepared by a Biology teacher to teach the subject provide a concrete experience about the lesson for the students since they are seen or heard or both. Instructional media utilization and teaching of biology in secondary schools.

 

Modern classrooms which are equipped with audio-visual equipment and a rich collection of audio-visual materials for learning enable the teacher to plan ideal teaching-learning scenarios. Today, the teaching of some special topics in science such as Biology is facilitated through tape recordings, radio programs and television lessons (Adegun, 2017).

Lindstorm (2022) recognized that conventional media technologies can no longer meet the needs of out reaching and learning process; as a result they are being replaced by multimedia technology. This instructional media provides a teaching-learning environment that is self-placed, learner-controlled and individualized. It is based on this premise that this study was carried out to examine instructional media utilization and teaching of biology in secondary schools.

 

1.2    Statement of the Problem

Effective use of instructional media for teaching depends on the capability of the teacher on the use of the media in the form of materials and equipment when these media are not used to teach Biology in secondary schools, this created a lot of problems in that it does not allow the students to be aware of the educational importance of some of our instructional media. Thus, this in turn takes away a sense of appreciation from the students of the significance of instructional media.

However, on the part of a teacher studies have shown that there is a chronic lack of the use of instructional media in the teaching of Biology (Wales, 2015) some teachers prefer to teach without materials to be detriment of the learners. Most of them lack the confidence of using the available instructional media to be inferior. Therefore, this prompts the researcher to investigate instructional media utilization and teaching of biology in secondary schools.

 

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to investigate instructional media utilization and teaching of biology in secondary schools. Specifically, the objectives of the study are:

  1. To find out the relationship between visual materials utilization and teaching of Biology.
  2. To determine the relationship between the use of audio-visual materials and the teaching of Biology.

 

1.4    Significance of the Study

This research has vivid significance most importantly will bring to awareness of relevant media which has bedeviled the effective biology teaching and learning consequently, it will make parents to see the need of providing instructional media like television, computer video tape at home for use by their children;

  • Firstly, the study shall alert the government on the urgent need to provide these media to schools for effective teaching of the subject.
  • Secondly, it will make Biology teachers to be aware of the place of instructional media in teaching as this will influence high performance of the learners. Instructional media utilization and teaching of biology in secondary schools.

 

  • Thirdly, the findings of this study will bring to our awareness the death supply of equipment, materials and infrastructure which have believed in the effective Biology teaching and learning.
  • Finally, the school of science in the college of education and other tertiary instructions will derive immense benefit accruing from this study.

 

1.5    Research Hypotheses

          The following null hypotheses were formulated for the study:

  1. There is no significant relationship between visual materials utilization and teaching of Biology.
  2. There is no significant relationship between the use of audio0visual materials and the teaching of Biology.

 

Definition of Terms

Instructional Media: These are media or things which are intended to help the teacher to teach more effectively and enable the students to learn more readily.

Utilization: This is the process of using media during teaching and learning of Biology.

Teaching: This is the act of imparting knowledge, skills and attitude by the professional to less experienced in an organized setting of an institution.

 

Conclusion

The place of instructional media in the effective implementati0on of any educational programme cannot be undermined especially in the study of Biology. This is because instructional media perform such functions as the extension of the range of experience available to learners, supplement and complement the teachers’ verbal explanations there by making learning experience richer and providing the teacher with interest into a wide variety of learning activities. Based on the findings and specific objectives of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

  1. There is a significant relationship between visual materials utilization and teaching of Biology.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the use of audio-visual materials and the teaching of Biology.
