INTRODUCTION
1.1 Â Â Â Background to the study
The academic achievement of any child cannot be separated from the family in which the child grows up. Healthy family background offers emotional security to the child (Agholor, 2022). Simply, a family is a group of who is closely related by blood, marriage or adoption. It is the smallest unit of human organization and is made up of Father, Mother and children as members. Members are held together through guided by common rule and regulation; they have rigout and responsibilities toward one another and the family as a unit.
Moreover, investigation as shown that family influence has strong relationships with academic outcome of a child. The impact of family variables on the academic achievement in schools is today’s receiving wide acknowledgement in many educational circles within the globe, the attention in this factor is receiving it tends credence to this point of view that family variables has influence on the academic achievement of a child.

Asaga (2016) observed that, the family environment and parent occupy the most important position on the child educational environment and whatever he could make out in the same way.
Furthermore, Akinboye (2006) trace this point from the time the child born into the family and left out that, hope of the child`s is mother and child father interaction and the style of discipline in the family may have effect on the learning rate the child in physics as a subjects. The child environment outside the school (his family background determines the performance of the learning in many subject such as Physics.
In addition, a search on the academic achievement studies revealed that various variable have been identified as related to academic achievement of secondary school students in physics (Kutnick and Layne, 2008). Research has also suggested that academic achievement can be predicted through creativity testing (hirch and Peterson, 2008).
Moreover, studies conducted on family variable in today`s modern society expected ever, one to be a high achievement. Indeed, the key criteria to Judge one’s true potentialities and capability are perhaps scholastic, academic achievement. Thus, academic achievement has become an index of a child future. Therefore, it is putting a great pressure on the min of children and their parent.
The scholastic achievement is a function of cognitive and is the resultant of various factors like persona, social, economic and other environmental factors. Research studies have proved that a supportive environment in family, school, and neighborhood could enhance a child scholastic achievement.
Family being the first and main agency of socialization has a great influence and bearing on the development of the child. It has been shown by various studies that most of the children who are successful/great achievement and well adjusted come from the family where sustaining wholesome relationship exist. So, it is the family which set the pattern for its child`s attitude toward people and society, aid intellectual growth in the child and supporters his aspiration and achievement in school. In addition, highly significant positive relationship exists between family variable and academic achievement of student (Showha and Sharma, 2017).
An ordinary observation suggested that family variables has a great deal of changing influence either positively or negatively on academic achievement of student and as such, parents ply the most importance roles as one of the powerful determinants in educational progress among students which may lead to success or failure. It can no longer be disputed that family involvement enhances the learning experience of the student family can create conditions, such as force and external stimuli that affect the individual cognitive development.
Bloom (2003), opined that explain much of the learning success of some students and the failure of the parents at this point is to ascertain the influence of family and its possible has effect on academic achievement of students. However, in this capacity parents serve as a facilitator by creating a bridge between success or failure of the students in their academic achievement in physics in senior secondary school. The study therefore is undertaken to ascertain how family variable influence the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in physics.
1.2Â Â Â Â Statement of the Problem
In recent years, there has been public outcry on the poor performance of students in both internal and external school examinations. Without reservation, the abysmal performance of students’ in school has become a recurring decimal in the nation’s educational system. However, the situation has generated concerns among teachers, parents, educational planners, policy makers, researchers and the government at large. Accordingly, in view of the continuous decline in academic achievement of students in both internal and external examinations, spirited efforts have been made to get the school system out of this quagmire yet no significant improvement has been recorded as the performance of our students in school is still on the decline. This development does not augur well for the realization of the objectives and goals of the teaching-learning process in schools and the nation’s educational system in general especially when one considers the huge financial investment in the sector by the government.
It is against this background therefore, that this study “the impact of family background on students’ academic achievement in physics” was carried out.
1.3Â Â Â Â Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of family background on students’ academic achievement in physics. Specifically, the objectives of this study are:
- To examine the performance of students in physics whose are from literate and illiterate family background.
- To examine the academic achievement of students in physics whose parent are from rural and urban family environment.
- To examine the academic achievement of the physics students whose parent are from low and high socio-economic status.
1.4Â Â Â Â Significant of the study
The study which aimed at finding out the influence of family variables on academic achievement of students is significant to the following individuals
- Parents: The finding of this study will aid them to chose a better learning environment for their word in both rural and urban areas as this will help to increase the academic achievement of their children in schools
- Students: it is hoped that this study will help students in the choice of school as also aid them to see the effect of environment on the study of several subject not in physics only.
- In addition, this study will give an insight to the educational planners, researchers, teachers, students and the entire communities. Thus, to give useful suggestion on how to reduce and encourage positive influence to enhance high level of academic achievement of students in secondary schools.
1.5Â Â Â Â Research Questions
The following research questions were postulated to give the study:
- What is the difference in the performance of students in physics who comes from literate and illiterate family background?
- What is the difference .in the performance of students in physics whose parent are from rural and urban family environments?
- What is the difference in performance of students in physics whose parents is from low and high socio-economic status?
1.6Â Â Â Â Research hypotheses
The following research hypotheses are formulated to guide the study.
- There is no significant difference in academic achievement of students in physics whose comes from literate and illiterate family background.
- There is no significant difference in academic achievement of the students in physics whose parents comes from rural and urban family environments.
- There is no significant difference in academic achievement of economic students whose parents are from low and high socio-economic status family background.
1.7Â Â Â Â Limitations of the study
Some of the challenges encountered while conducting the research include lack of sufficient funds and short duration assigned for the study.
1.8Â Â Â Â Definition of the Term
Family: In brief, family refers to a group of people living together and related by blood.
Academic achievement: this refers to the achievement of students in schools subject by students as indicated by score in a relevant test.
Students: this refers to children or an adult that went to higher school of learning either secondary or university.
Physics: The scientific study of matter and energy and relationship between them including the study, of forces, heat, sound, electricity and structure of atom.
Conclusion
Indeed, the success of children in schools depends to a large extent on their ability to read, write, and comprehend; which depends on the environment which they brought up. Therefore, the study of the impact of family background on students academic achievement in physics, revealed that there is significant difference between students in literate and illiterate home. The impact of family background on students’ academic achievement in physics.
Also, there is a significant difference between students in rural home and those in urban home as well as socio-economic status of parents, also motivation on the part as parent and teacher is a great significant contributory factors to the academic achievement of students. However, family variable with regard to parental income, family location and educational status of parent  has a great influence on the academic achievement of students in physics.
