CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1          Background to the Study

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected through digital platforms, the role of digital and information technology in shaping religious practices, outreach, and community engagement within the church has become a subject of interest for scholars, religious leaders, and practitioners alike. Without reservation, digital technology has stimulated rapid change and considerable challenges throughout the modern world (Aidan, Dorit, Andrew and Cathy, 2023).

According to Aidan, Dorit, Andrew and Cathy (2023), the advent of digital and information technology has revolutionized the way people communicate, access information, and engage with their communities. In the context of the church, these technological advancements have had a profound impact on various aspects of religious life, including worship practices, outreach efforts, community building, and administrative functions.

The universal Church has also addressed the digital reality. Since 1967, for example, the yearly World Communications Day messages have offered an ongoing reflection on the topic. Beginning in the 1990s, these messages addressed the use of the computer and since the early 2000s, they have consistently reflected on aspects of digital culture and social communication.

IMPACT OF DIGITAL AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON CHURCH GROWTH

Raising fundamental questions for digital culture, Pope Benedict XVI, in 2009, addressed the shifts in patterns of communication, saying that media should not only foster connections between people but also encourage them to commit themselves to relationships that promote “a culture of respect, dialogue and friendship.”(Pope Francis, 2022).

Subsequently, the Church consolidated the image of social media as “spaces”, not only “tools”, and called for the Good News to be proclaimed also in digital environments. For his part, Pope Francis has acknowledged that the digital world is “indistinguishable from the sphere of everyday life,” and it is changing the way humanity accumulates knowledge, disseminates information, and develops relationships (Pope Francis, 2022).

According to Johnson and Sarah (2020), one of the most significant ways in which technology has influenced church growth is through its role in facilitating communication and connection among congregants. Digital platforms such as social media, websites, and mobile applications have provided churches with powerful tools to reach out to existing members, connect with potential new members, and foster a sense of community among geographically dispersed congregations.

Furthermore, digital technology has also transformed the way religious teachings and sermons are disseminated. Online streaming services, podcasts, and video sharing platforms have enabled churches to broadcast their services to a global audience, transcending physical boundaries and reaching individuals who may not have had access to traditional forms of worship. This expanded reach has the potential to contribute to the growth of churches by attracting new followers and engaging with individuals who may not have otherwise been exposed to religious teachings (Brown and Michael, 2018).

In addition to outreach and communication, digital technology has also impacted the administrative functions of churches. Williams (2017), stated that, the use of digital tools for managing finances, organizing events, maintaining membership records, and facilitating volunteer coordination has streamlined many aspects of church operations. This increased efficiency can free up resources that can be redirected towards furthering the mission and growth of the church.

However, alongside these opportunities, there are also challenges associated with the integration of digital technology into religious practices. One such challenge is the potential for technology to detract from authentic human connection and spiritual experiences. As churches embrace digital platforms for worship services and community engagement, there is a risk that the personal and communal aspects of religious practice may be diluted or overshadowed by virtual interactions (Lee, 2021).

Moreover, Johnson and Sarah (2020) concerns about privacy, data security, and ethical considerations surrounding online engagement within religious communities have emerged as important considerations for churches navigating the digital landscape. The responsible use of technology within a religious context requires careful consideration of these ethical implications to ensure that digital platforms are leveraged in a manner consistent with the values and principles of the faith community.

In light of these considerations, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of digital and information technology on church growth.

By examining both the opportunities and challenges presented by technological advancements within the context of church , this research seeks to examine the impact of digital and information technology on church growth as well as offer insights that can inform strategic decision-making for church leaders and contribute to a deeper understanding of the evolving relationship between digital technology and the church.

1.2          Statement of the Problem

Understanding the multifaceted impact of digital and information technology on church growth requires a comprehensive exploration of its implications for religious teachings, community engagement, organizational dynamics, and spiritual experiences within church communities.

One significant aspect to consider is the influence of digital and information technology on the dissemination of religious teachings and messages.

With the widespread availability of online platforms, social media, and digital communication tools, churches have expanded their reach beyond traditional physical congregations. This raises questions about how these technological channels impact the spread of religious teachings, as well as how they contribute to the growth of church communities.

Additionally, the use of digital technology for virtual worship services and online religious education programs has become increasingly prevalent, prompting inquiries into their effectiveness in fostering spiritual growth and community participation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the impact of digital and information technology on church growth.

1.3          Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study was to examine the impact of digital and information technology on church growth. Specifically, the objectives of the study are:

  1. To investigate the modes digital and information technologies used in churches
  2. To determine the impact of digital and information technology on growth in churches.
  3. To assess the impact of church morals as an influence in the adoption of digital and information technology as a communication tool.
  4. To provide strategies that can be implemented by churches as a way to increase growth in communication through digital and information technology.

1.4          Research Questions

The following research questions guided the study:

  1. Which modes of digital and information technologies are being used within churches?
  2. How does digital and information technology impact growth of the church?
  3. What strategies can be put in place to increase communication within churches today through digital and information technology?

1.5          Significance of the Study

The study will enable the church leaders and administration to gain deeper understanding and better appreciation of digital and information technology use in churches to enhance church growth.

The study will open more windows for further researches to future researchers who desire to study more on digital and information technology in churches and how it enhances church growth.

It will also add value on literature concerning the impact of digital and information technology in churches as few studies have only been written concerning the issue.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that the impact of digital and information technology on church growth are multifaceted and transformative. Through online worship, global community building amplified evangelistic efforts and facilitated discipleship; new media has become integral to the church’s journey in reaching and impacting lives worldwide. While challenges such as internet connectivity and maintaining doctrinal integrity exist, the church’s dedication to discernment, biblical grounding, and technological adaptation will enable it to navigate these obstacles successfully.

Therefore, as technology continues to advance, it is essential for churches and denominations to adapt, harnessing the power of new media while remaining rooted in biblical principles, ultimately fulfilling their divine purpose in a digitally connected world.
