CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Background to the Study

The academic performance of any child cannot be separated from the family in which the child grows. A healthy home background offers emotional security to a child (Agholor, 2022). Clark (2015) defines a family as any group of people that are related by blood or marriage especially a group of two grown-up people and their children. Indeed, there are nuclear and extended families.

Nuclear family consists of only the husband and his wife together with their children whereas extended family consists of the husband, the wife, the children and other relations living together in a large family compound.

The impact of family background on the academic achievement in school is receiving wide acknowledgement in many educational cycles within the globe; Asaga (2016), stressed that the home and parents occupy the most important position in the childā€™s educational attainment and whatever they could make out of it.

In fact, it is important to imagine that family size of parents can have some effects on the academic achievement of children in schools. What so ever affect the family of the learners would possibly affect their education or disposition to it.

Indeed, family size of the learners is one of such variables. The nature of family from which a child belongs has a lot of influence on the general life pattern of the child as well as academic performance in school (Amalo, 2012). It is in the light of the foregoing that this study seeks to examine family size and academic performance of primary school pupils in social studies in primary schools.
