INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
An adjectival phrase as a type of phrase is a group of words that plays the role of an adjective in a sentence. It usually has a single adjective as its head, to which modifies and complements maybe added. Moreover, adjective can be modifies by a preceding adverb or adverb phrase, as in very warm, truly imposing, etc. Some can also be preceded by a noun or quantitative phrase, as in fat- free, two meter long.
There are so many errors and mistaken forms of other phrases which students usually take it to be adjectival phrases, for the fact that they do not understand the concept of adjective and adjectival phrases English adjectives as with other word classes cannot in general be identified as such by their form although many of them are formed from nouns or other words by the addition of a suffix such as –al (habitual), -ful (blissful), -ic (atomic), -ish (impish, youngish), -ous (hazardous), etc, or from other adjectives using a prefix: disloyal, irredeemable, unforeseen, overtired.

The most important thing is to note that adjectives particularly those that are longer and less common, do not have inflected comparative and superlative forms.
According to Aniekan Nyarks (2012), Adjectival phrase is seen as a prepositional phrase which performs the duty of modifying or limiting the definition of nouns or pronouns. E.g.
Firstly, that teacher in the class gave us permission.
Secondly, we entered the room near the laboratory. The errors of the usages of English adjectival phrases by students.
According to the illustration above, the prepositional phrase “in the class” is an adjectival phrase because it describes a particular teacher the speaker referred to. In example (ii) the adjectival phrase “neat the laboratory” describes a specific room (noun) the speaker is talking about.
Since a phrase itself is a group of words without a finite verb but it functions as a part of sentence. Adjectival phrase that tells us something about the noun it is modifying. The head (principal) word in an adjectival phrase will be an adjective. In the example below, the adjectival phrase is underlined and the head word (i.e. the adjective) is in bold. Briton, L (2000).
i The nearby hotel offers cheap but comfortable rooms (the head adjective starts the adjectival phrase).
ii These are unbelievably expensive shoes.
(the head adjective ends the adjectival phrase).
iii Deborah was fairly bored with you.
(the head adjective is the middle of the adjectival phrase).
Like a normal adjective, an adjectival phrase can be used before the noun it is modifying.
(Like in the first two examples above) or after the noun it is modifying (like in the last example).
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It has been observed that, some students believe that adjectival phrases can only be used attributively while some think it can only be used predicatively. this misconceptions in the wages of this type of phrase has prompted researchers to seek for a way to remedy this erroneous usages of the adjectival phrases in English language.
However, identifying of adjectival phrases in English sentences has been a major problem to students. It is against this background that the study on errors of the usages of English adjectival phrases by students becomes imperative.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY.
The main purpose of this study is to examine errors of the usages of English adjectival phrases by students in secondary schools. The study aims to clearly state the adjectival phrases and their usages as it will also correct some of the erroneous misconceptions by students. In addition, this study will suggest measures toward improving the ugly Syndrome.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY.
The study will be of immense benefits to teacher, educators, students, other researchers and Academic institutions in the following way:
Firstly, it will reveal the concept of adjectival phrase and how they are used in sentences.
Secondly, through the exposure and explanation of this concept, the Students will be acquainted with adjectival phrases as majority of their sentences will be devoid of errors. The errors of the usages of English adjectival phrases by students.
Lastly, the study will serve as a spring board and reference point for future researchers in the area of research.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.
- Students are ignorant of the role of adjectival phrases and that is why they have a divided opinion on whether adjectival phrases can be use attributively or predicatively.
- Student’s confusion must arise from poor teaching of the subject.
- Poor teaching of the subject is probably a result of unqualified teaching English Language.
Following the above assumptions these research questions were constructed.
- To what extent do adjectival phrases modify attributively or predicatively?
- To what extent does poor teaching method confused students on the direction of modification of adjectival phrase?
- To what extent does the teacher’s qualification ensure good teaching method?
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY.
The scope of this study is limited to The errors of the usages of English adjectival phrases by students in the study area. This means that the scope of the study is not extended to other areas of the state. it has nothing to do with personal characteristics of the students.
Also, the major limitation to this study was inadequate finance, insufficient research information on the topic of the research. Also the researcher had to combine his academic work load with the study which posed a delay to timely delivery of the research work.
DEFINITION OF TERMS.
In the course of the research, the following terms where confronted and meanings were given:
Phrase: In brief, a group of words without a finite verb which functions as part of a sentence.
Errors: A mistake especially one that causes problems or affects the result of something.
Modify: To change something slightly especially in order to make it more suitable for a particular purpose.
CONCLUSION
The study effectively reviewed Errors in the usages of English adjectival phrase of the students. In the course of the research, the attitude and responses of some students and other individuals were closely examined be as to arrive at the analysis. To achieve this objective, three research questions were formulated to guide the study.
The major instrument adopted for data collection was a well structured questionnaire for the students. Recommendations were also made.
