CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Poor physical characteristics of the school such as lighting, noisy environment, and high levels of carbondioxide in classroom, inconsistent temperature and unfenced environment have been observed as some of the factors that threaten students and teachers from deriving maximum benefits during study. Moreover, the understanding of the nature of the study environment for a meaningful organization of study process is important (Akale and Nwankwonta, 2022).

Furthermore, China (2019) reported that value of reading to the individual provided the individuals with the key to upgrade himself, learn new skills and acquired new knowledge easily. Undeniably, the environment in which study takes place is an important factor in determining the performance of the students.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY 

Without reservation, various studies show that noise exposure affects educational outcomes in-that, students learn by listening to the teacher and to each other’s. Excessive noise can also interfere learning by affecting memory (Ihde, 2018) and acting as a distraction that impairs a students’ ability to pay attention.

 

In addition, the knowledge, needed to move adjustment smooth and less painful can only be acquired through systematic and coordinated study environment. Indeed, studies on students’ environment fits (Fraser and Fisher, 2019) have shown that students’ achievement is greater where there is strong positive association between the actual classroom environment and those preferred by the students.

Ajewole (2016) observes that children under the expository method tend to memorize facts and principles most of which they do not understand, only to regurgitate them during examinations. Therefore, this study aimed to examine environmental variables and academic performance of students in biology in secondary schools.

 

1.2    Statement of the Problem

Indeed, the environment in which study takes place is an important factor in determining the students’ performance. But if the environment is not conducive and quiet, it can cause distraction. It can also retard the learning process and making learning difficult. When the environment is disturbed no meaningful learning can be achieved. It can also cause fatigue and restless.

 

Moreover, students’ level of Biology achievement is characterized by varieties of environmental variables such as seats, accommodation, poor lighting, noisy environment, unfenced school environment etc. can also be a barrier to effective studying and can result in low concentration and lack of attention. However, researchers showed that most students’ performance in Biology is poor yet it is one of the core subjects in our senior secondary school curriculum.

Therefore, it is based on this gap that the researcher sought to investigate environmental variables and academic performance of students in biology in secondary schools.

 

1.3    Purpose of the Study

This study in general sought to examine environmental variables and academic performance of students in biology in secondary schools. Specifically, the study aimed at determining:

  1. The extent to which school perimeter fence on students’ learning influence the academic performance of students in Biology.
  2. The extent to which environmental noise influence the academic performance of students in Biology.

 

1.4    Research Hypotheses

          The following hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:

  1. There is no significant difference in the academic performance of Biology students in fenced school environment and those in an unfenced school environment.
  2. There is no significant difference in the academic performance of Biology students in serene environment and those in a noisy environment.

 

1.5    Significance of the Study

  • Firstly, mobilization human and material resources through proper funding of schools which should no longer be taken lightly as infrastructure alone in schools will not bring about the much needed improvement in the academic performance of students in Biology.
  • To the government it will enable them to understand that safety of the students is the most important thing to consider. Environmental variables and academic performance of students in biology in secondary schools.
  • Also, to the parents it will make them to understand that schools with fence can help reduce the risk in which their children could encounter in schools.
  • It will also be important to the student to know that an environment that is not serene can affect their performances in their studies.

 

Operational Definition of Terms

Environment: This refers to the external physical conditions that affects and influence the growth and development of students in pursuit of knowledge as by reading, observation or research.

Environmental Variable: In brief, this refers to everything influencing students and learning in schools from the environment.

Academic Performance: In brief, it means the interpretation assigned to students’ performance in Biology test an examination or assessment of the true student academic stands in Biology test and assignment and in examination.

 

Fenced School Environment: In this study, it means an environment in which students has the freedom to pursue daily activities within the schools environment without the fear of encountering in danger or large scale of violence from the environment that may have arisen.

Unfenced School Environment: In this study, it means an environment where students is having a lack of confidence or exposed to danger or risk  during his/her stay in schools or during classroom instructions. Environmental variables and academic performance of students in biology in secondary schools.

Serene Environment: In this study, it means an environment that is calm, peaceful and unaffected by disturbance such that students can learn effectively during teaching-teaching process.

 

Noisy Environment/Environmental Noise: In this study, it means the summary of noise pollution from outside, caused by transport, industrial and recreational activities such that it makes teaching-learning process/classroom instructions in school difficult.

Biology: Is the science of life and living organisms or the study of living organisms.

Facilities: In this study, it means a place, amenity or place of equipment use by student in order to do or learn something well and easily.

Education: Is the process of receiving or giving systematic instructions at a school or university. It is also the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits.

 

Conclusion

The environment in which studying takes place is an important factor in determining the students’ performance in Biology and other subjects.

Therefore a conducive environment is what the students need for better performance, since poor environment can cause brain-fag syndrome in student (Failure to retrain, remember and recall facts).
