CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The hue and cries on fallen standard of education especially in secondary schools in Nigeria have been a source of concern to experts in education. The worries so entertained are not out of place because education determines growth, development and a nation’s position in global ranking. Moreover, there is no nation that hold indulge perpetually in occupying the backseat in today’s knowledge driven society. It is in consideration of this that every stakeholder from both the public and private sector on daily basis strategize tactically to improve the quality of our educational system.

The determination of world bodies to ensure literacy of citizens all over the globe has also served as a push to efforts made by Nigerians and the Nigerian government.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES UTILIZATION AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY

However, education for all by 2015 and other targets of governments have engendered the signing of various agreements to make sure that the school-age children are actually in school. Thus, based on these unpalatable stories, the utilization of the resources put in education should be questioned alongside the academic performance of the students. Environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology.

The fact should not be set aside that if provisions are averagely made in terms of both physical and human resources and the performance of students are still dwindling, it is then not out of place to query the utilization of the resources so provided. In fact, educational facilities are no doubt supposed to enhance academic performance in schools.

Furthermore, Albert (2020) succinctly puts school facilities and materials resources that facilities effective teaching and learning in the schools. School facilities serve as pillar of support fro effective teaching and learning.

The vital role played by school facilities in student’s achievement and teacher’s job performance cannot be over emphasized (Okpala, 2016). Hence, it becomes pertinent that the utilization of the facilities in the schools be investigated to know the quantum of their relevance to the performance of Biology students in secondary schools. Therefore, this research study is designed to examine environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology.

1.2  Statement of the Problem

The phenomenon of poor external examination results in secondary school, Biology among Nigerian students has become a source of worry to successive governments.

The majority of students who sat for the West African Senior Secondary Schools Examination have been recording mass failure not only in the areas of Biology but also in key subjects like Mathematics and English (Akinsolu, 2023). Therefore, this research study is designed to find out environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to examine environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology. Specifically, the study is aimed at the following:

  1. To find out if there is any significant difference in the academic achievement of students taught Biology using environmental resources and those taught without environmental resources.
  2. To examine if there is any difference in academic achievement of male and female students taught Biology with the use of environmental resources.

1.4    Significance of the Study

The study is highly significant in that it seeks to know the rate at which environmental resources utilization affects academic achievement of biology students. Therefore the findings of this study shall be significant in many ways and to different people.

i        Firstly, it will help the science teachers see the need of using the environmental resources available for teaching

ii        Secondly, it will help the government, educator, stakeholders in education to see the need of training secondary school teachers on improvisation. Environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology.

iii       Finally, it  will serve as a reference point to other researchers who may have interest in writing a research of this kind

1.5    Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were formulated to guide this study:

a)       There is no significant difference in academic achievement of students taught Biology using environmental resources and those taught without environmental resources

b)        There is no Significant difference in academic achievement of male and female students taught Biology using environmental resources.

Operational Definition of Terms

Environmental Resources: These are the available materials (natural or artificial) in the world around the teaching-learning setting adopted for use by Biology teachers during teaching and learning.

Utilization: This is the way or technical know-how and skills of handling materials to suit the advantageous need they were meant for.

Academic Achievement: In brief, this refers to the students’ level of attainment in the school work, assignment, test and Examination scores.

Conclusion

A careful analysis of the results of the study, review of literature and the actual research findings in this paper indicate that the improvisation and use of environmental resources is very important in the teaching of and learning process. As such, for effective teaching and learning of Biology to take place, it is necessary to adopt environmental resources by the teachers in imparting knowledge to the learners. Environmental resources utilization and academic achievement of secondary school students in biology.

The use of environmental resources in teaching helps to motivate students and boost their academic achievement. Hence, teachers should use environmental resources in teaching to increase the level of understanding of students and increase class participation.
