CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Motivation is a factor required in the realization of the objectives of education in Nigerian secondary schools. Inadequate use of motivation by teachers therefore may go a long way in decreasing students’ interest in learning. Patrick (2022) refers to motivation as an act that causes a person to act or to do something. Olabaji (2023) views motivation as an incentive which incites, inspires and promotes the desire for the individual in learning. It also makes the study interesting to students.

Moreover, the learning environment, teachers’ motivation and knowledge development of (students) learners relatively need attention in the field of teaching and learning. However, what happens in the classroom between psychological implication of teachers concerning their motivation and students’ ability to study well has an impact on students’ academic achievement and opportunity to learn (Olabaji, 2023).

Indeed, the concept of motivation on students’ academic achievement continues to be a vital topic throughout all levels of education (Alexander, 2021). Various approaches which a teacher uses in motivating students have been articulated in education circles but educators are still coming to terms with best-fit models to inspire students in classroom settings.

EFFECT OF MOTIVATION ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN HOME ECONOMICS

According to Alexander (2021), motivational techniques could arouses interest, enthusiasm and regulate the student’s behavior in order to perform different tasks with interest for the attainment of educational goals.

Critically, teachers’ motivation can be classified into intrinsic motivation and interest in activities that exists within an individual rather than outside pressure. It is the foundation of having enjoyment in performing activity without any external incentives.

Whereas individuals who are extrinsically motivated need, rewards and the punishments to engaged in any activity. For students, rewards can be in the form of grades and marks in examination or test. Achievement motivation is concerned with achieving the successful outcomes at the end of the process.

According to Oziki (2012), availability of teaching/learning resources and teachers’ motivation enhances the effectiveness of schools as these are basic things that can bring about good academic achievement in the students. Obviously, in teaching-learning process with the help of motivational strategy can maintain, control, and arouse interest of the learners.

However, students’ learning process becomes more successful by using different motivational strategies. In the teaching-learning process, teachers’ motivation is used to encourage and boost up the students’ ambition so that they can put more effort in their learning process. Motivation in education is the degree of self-esteem to processes and sense of value to determine how well the student can improve and develop their learning which can exploit their potential (Halonen and Santrock, 2009).

As opined by Sprint (2002), teachers can utilize successful strategies and tactics to make learning effective because motivation plays a significant role to arouse the students’ interest towards the learning process.

Therefore, at all educational levels it is important for instructors to understand the value of motivational practices. This is because students’ engagement remains an important concern among educators. Although, it is believed that the reward for the teachers is in heaven. For this, Home Economics teachers may use positive reinforcement because it plays a significant role in achieving the students’ academic achievements. However, this study therefore seeks to determine the effect of motivation on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

The performance of students towards achieving educational goals is said to be very important in most society today. The negative achievement of students towards an educational aims and objectives could be associated to the low motivational strategy used by school and teachers most especially in the area of Home Economics.

Oziki (2022) stated that school and teachers have the biggest impact on the success and flaws of students’ academic achievement because the application of good teaching approaches are instrumental in helping learners to learn from one another. This motivation may be aroused by either extrinsic or intrinsic stimuli both of which are important in directing and regulating the learner’s behaviour towards attainment of the desired goals. The effect of motivation on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics in secondary school.

Undeniably, the teachers in most secondary schools often are faced with a variety of problems in teaching of Home Economics in the class. One of such problems include that students are not motivated during teaching and learning activities.

Other factors responsible for poor academic achievement of students in Home Economics were poor attitude of teachers on the use for reward and punishment, use of praise and blame among others as these influence students’ performance when not properly used.

However, when some of the above motivational strategies are employed by teachers teaching Home Economics, students’ achievement in the subject will improve. It was based on the above premise that this study was conducted to investigate how motivations influence academic achievement among students in Home Economics in secondary schools.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of motivation on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics in secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. Specifically, the objectives of the study are:

  1. To determine the effect of teachers’ reward on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics.
  2. To examine the effect of teachers’ Praise on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics.

1.4    Significance of the Study

The study shall be significant in the following ways:

  • It will help government and education board to understand the effect of motivation on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics so that they can advise teachers on how and ways to motivate students.
  • It will also enable teachers to structure students’ education through improvisation of instructional materials to make them more effective in helping to improving the efficiency of their academic achievement.

  • Furthermore, it will bring to light the role of motivation in the classroom experience of Home Economics students in secondary schools. Thus, whether this element of motivation is an added factor to achievement by students of Home Economics in schools. The effect of motivation on students’ academic achievement in Home Economics in secondary school.
  • In addition, the stakeholders in education to motivate Home Economics teachers as this will help the teachers teaching the subject and look for better ways they can motivate their students for better academic achievement.
  • Finally, the outcomes of this study will serve as a reservoir of knowledge where future researchers can easily tap knowledge as the work will be documented.

1.5    Research Questions

The following research questions were formulated to guide the study:

  1. To what extent does teachers’ reward influence students’ academic achievement in Home Economics?
  2. How does teachers’ praise influence students’ academic achievement in Home Economics?

 1.6    Statement of Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:

  1. There is no significant difference between academic achievement of students in Home Economics who obtained teachers’ reward and those who do not.
  2. There is no significant difference between academic achievement of students in Home Economics who receive praise from their teachers and those who do not.

Definition of Terms

Motivation: This is a force which initiates, energize, sustains and stimulates learner’s behaviour to act towards a chosen goals.

Academic achievement: In brief, this refers to the scoring or exhibited ability of students in school test, examination and other related activities in the school.

Students: As used in this study refers to as group of learners in both the secondary schools and at the higher institution of learning.

Secondary School: In brief, this refers to a school or learning environment responsible for the training of students from 10 to 18 years of age.

Home Economics: Home Economics is defined as a skill-oriented, decision-making subject, that equips learners with skills and knowledge which will help them to be self- employed and at the same time, contribute effectively to the socioeconomic development of the family and society.

Conclusion

The findings of the study illustrate that motivation improves academic performance of students in Home Economics. As such, students need to be motivated so that they can do better in their academic pursuit. In motivating students, there is need to use both intrinsic and extrinsic ways of motivation. Both ways of motivation are necessary and none of them is indispensable.

This is because for students to learn Home Economics effectively and for better academic achievement in the subject; appropriate motivational strategies such as teachers’ use of rewards, teachers’ praise as well as conducive school environment should be used for effective teaching and learning. This is due to the fact that motivation during teaching and learning of Home Economics by the teacher helps in making the students excited.

Based on the objectives of the study, the following conclusions were made for the study:

  1. There is a significant difference between academic achievement of students in Home Economics who obtained teachers’ reward and those who do not.
  2. There is a significant difference between academic achievement of students in Home Economics who receive praise from their teachers and those who do not.
