INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is as old as man and found in every culture and society. This is because education is designed to meet the needs of the individual and that of the society. Education is therefore an aspect of specialization intended to enable the individual learn attitudes, values, norms and behaviours , considered desirable by members of a particular culture. In this regard, education is seen as a life long process which spans from the cradle to the grave. It is a part of the fabric of society. Education has evolved through history (Uruaikpa, 2017).
In our society today, education is seen as the key that unlocks the doors to modernization. In this regard, it has become important for the authorities concerned to enforce such activities that will promote the quality of education obtainable in our society so as to avoid the situation of producing educated illiterates. However, every educational system in this country needs discipline to tackle delinquent behaviours among students.
DELINQUENT BEHAVIOURS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ECONOMICS
According to (Duke 2019), school discipline is the system of rules, punishments and behavioral strategies appropriate to the regulation of learners and the maintenance of orders in schools. It’s aim is to control the student’s actions and behaviours and also create a safe and conducive learning environment in the classroom. The author maintained that school discipline set limit restricting certain delinquent behaviours or attitude that are seen as harmful or going against school policies, educational norms etc.
However, student’s delinquent behaviours has been overtime an issue of worry for educators, policy makers and the public, owing to the outbreak of aggressiveness among peers, violence within teacher- students relationship, examination dishonesty, drug abuse, vandalism, cultism and absenteeism as well (Harlen, 2020). The author defined delinquent behaviour as the juvenile and criminal behaviour among young people as they negotiate the transition from childhood to maturity or adult hood in an increasing complex and confusing society.
Zeisel (2016) pointed out that the goal behaviour is necessary, but not sufficient to ensure academic growth,” Effective School discipline strategies seek to encourage responsible behaviour and to provide all students with a satisfying school experience as well as discourage misconduct. The author further stressed that school discipline has two main goals of ensuring the safety of staff and students and also creating a conducive learning environment. Thus, students’ delinquent activities involving violent or criminal behaviour defeat those goals and often make headlines in the process.
Determining the case of delinquent behaviour, Boroffice (2014), identified factors such as biological, psychological, social, attitudes, beliefs, sense of his failure among others as some of the factors that pre- disposed students to unhealthy behaviours.
On the other hand, Okoro (2023), listed primary factor such as; family types, parenting style, parental conflict and separation, criminal siblings and parents, environmental factors such as; school environment, physical and family environment, sociological factors such as; peer group influence, peer group rejection and self-esteem as causes of delinquent behaviour among students. The delinquent behaviours and academic performance of secondary school students in Economics.
Nevertheless, delinquent behaviours have some negative effects in the school system: such as; graduating students who are half-baked, unequipped as a result of examination dishonesty. Hence, if the quality of education in our country must be improved, delinquent behaviour such as examination dishonesty, rioting, cultism, drug abuse and absenteeism etc must be well taken care of in schools.
It is on this note that, this research will seek to examine the above mentioned areas of delinquent behaviours as it affects students academic performance in Economics in secondary schools in Itu Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The persistent involvement of our students in social vices in schools and their subsequent poor academic performance in Economics have been a worry to educators and stakeholders in the teaching profession over the years.
Nevertheless, researcher and scholars have begun to investigate the factors responsible for the poor performance of students in various subjects. Among the factors identified were poor study habits, excessive work load and teachers teaching method among others. To solve these problems, government has made concerted efforts as well as putting up many strategies in place to curb these excessive. All these efforts not withstanding the academic performance of students in the various subjects are still on the decline.
However, available data have shown that little or no research has been conducted along the line of delinquent behaviours in relation to student’s academic performance in our school. However, there is no doubt in the fact that most of the social vices perpetuated by students in school which culminated into their poor academic performance could be associated with delinquent behaviours.
It is as a result of the abuse reasons that the researcher is motivated to conduct a study on delinquent behaviours and academic performance in Economics among secondary school students in Itu Local Government Area.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
This study aimed to examine delinquent behaviours and academic performance of secondary school students in Economics in Itu Local Government Area.
Specifically, the study intends to:
- Examine the significant difference between truancy and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
- Ascertain the significant difference between aggressive behaviour and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
- Assess the significant difference between drug abuse and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
1.4 Significant of the Study
The study is significant in that, it’s outcome will be immense benefits to teachers, curriculum planners, researchers, students and the society in general in the following ways:
- The study will bring to light, revealing if the poor academic performance of students in Economics is associated with delinquent behaviours.
- Effort will be made to encourage students to be at their best studying.
- The study will also expose to the general public to the dangers associated with school vandalism.
- It will help teachers and students who are drug addicts to realize the need to stop drug abuse.
- It will remind parents of their responsibilities in training their children because most of the delinquent behaviours emanates from their homes. The delinquent behaviours and academic performance of secondary school students in Economics.
- Finally, it is significant because it’s finding will enrich the existing knowledge delinquent behaviour and academic performance and at the time provide a basis or stepping stone to future researchers on the topic of delinquent behaviours in relation to students’ academic performance in schools.
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses were formulated for the study:
- There is no significant difference between truancy and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
- There is no significant difference between aggressive behaviour and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
- There is no significant difference between drug abuse and academic performance of students in Economics in secondary schools.
Definition of Terms
Delinquent Behaviours: A person, usually young, who behaves in a way that is illegal or unacceptable to most people in and around the society he stays.
Examination Dishonesty: This is an illegal way of writing and passing examination.
Vandalism: This refers to the intentional abuse, damage or destruction of property such as school facilities, residential facilities etc.
Drug Abuse: A situation whereby drug is taken in excess dosage such that it becomes harmful and dangerous.
Cultism: It is an enclosed organized association devoted to the same cause.
Absenteeism: A fact of being frequently away from school, especially without good reason.
Conclusion
From empirical evidence and feed- back from the respondents, the study have revealed that delinquent behaviours such as truancy, drug abuse and aggressive behaviours have adversely affected the academic performance of students in Economics in Secondary Schools. The delinquent behaviours and academic performance of secondary school students in Economics.
As such, the study concluded that delinquent behaviour hinders effective learning and could lead to poor academic performance of the students. Again, constant absence from school has serious negative consequences both for truant youth themselves and for communities, which suffer both short and long- term threats to public safety.
