INTRODUCTION
1.1 Â Â Background to the study
Education in Nigeria has become a vital tool for all forms of development; technological, economical, and scientific, etc. A nation cannot grow nor develop above her educational level and quality of human resources depends upon the quality of education of a country (Shabbir, Wei Guang Fu, Chnong, Attaf Marwat, Nabi and Ahmed, 2021). Education sector has therefore become an ‘industry’ where the government invests so much, so as to reap the dividend through infrastructural development in the nation.
However, a number of factors have been identified as affecting students’ academic performances. Specifically, some of these include; students’ family background (Rumberger, 2020), parental discipline (Aremu, 2020), degree of self-efficacy and anxiety (Aremu and Adika, 2020), school location (Aremu, 2019), etc. Another emerging factor of academic achievement is the school the learner attends (Sentamu, 2023).
According to Nwokocha and Amadike (2015), academic performance of students is the yardstick for testing educational quality of a nation. Hence, it is expedient to maintain a high performance in internal and mostly external examinations.

However, a desirable school program for the best development of the children will provide opportunity for a wide variety of physical activities and for the development of skills, which can be used throughout life. The new National Policy on Education (NPE, 2014) revised edition reiterated that Physical and Health Education has been regarded as one of the core and example subject at the junior secondary school certificate examination (JSSCE) and that must be passed before the certificate is awarded to candidates. However, inspite of its inclusion in the National Policy on Education, little concern is attributed to the teaching of Physical and Health Education in secondary school (Olarewaju, 2015).
Olarewaju (2015) further stated that a clear observation of the student’s attitude shows that they do not have an interest in the subject, especially when it comes to the practical aspect for the fear of injury and due to religious doctrine which frown at female exposing their bodies for the sake of performance. In addition, Pyrex (2015) opined that there is significant difference in the academic performance of male and female physical and Health Education students in Junior secondary school certificate examination (JSSCE) between 2011- 2012. Comparative analysis of academic performance of students in junior secondary school certificate examination.
Male physical and Health Education students performed significantly than their female counter parts in Junior secondary school certificate Examination (JSSCE) between 2011- 2012. The performance was as a result of male engagement in sport activities and recreational activities. Consequently, physical and Health Education has a positive educational influence on children who are slow, dull and lethargic (Lawal, 2021). Therefore this work focus on a comparative analysis of academic performance of students in junior secondary school certificate examination.
1.2Â Â Â Statement of the Problem
Undeniably, the issue of poor performance in junior secondary school certificate Examination (JSSCE) has in recent times, been on the increase. Moreover, considering that the purpose of secondary education is to develop the individual who is not academically sound becomes fit in the society, to which he belongs.
However, over the years, students in junior secondary schools have been performing poorly in their junior secondary school Certificate Examination. The poor performance seems to discourage many students to further their education into senior level. It must be noted that, JSSCE is an essential certificate in educational qualification of every country.
Thus, the purpose of this study is on a comparative analysis of academic performance of students in junior secondary school certificate examination.
1.3Â Â Â Purpose of the study
The purpose of this study was a comparative analysis of academic performance of students in junior secondary school certificate examination.
Specifically, the study sought to:-
- Compare the academic performance of students in physical and health education in junior secondary school certificate examination.
- Compare the academic performance of students in physical and health education in junior secondary school certificate examination.
- Compare the academic performance of students in physical and health education in junior secondary school certificate examination.
1.4 Â Â Significance of the study
The result of this study shall be significant in many ways and to different people.
- The findings of this study will reveal to the students, their performance in JSSCE and the need to sit up and work hard in order to improve.
- Secondly, it will help the parent to know the level of their wards education and the type of school they should enroll their wards. Comparative analysis of academic performance of students in junior secondary school certificate examination.
- It will also help the government to provide adequate facilities needed in schools in order to promote teaching and learning of physical and Health Education.
- Finally, the study will serve as a working instrument to other researchers who may have interest in writing a research of this kind.
1.5 Â Â Research Hypotheses
The following research hypotheses were formulated to give direction to the study.
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of students in PHE who wrote JSSCE in public and private school.
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of PHE male and female students who wrote JSSCE.

Student Performance: This refers to the scoring or exhibited ability of students in school test, examination and other related activities in school.
Public School: In brief, these are schools owned and managed by the government.
