CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background to the Study

It is indisputable that the genesis of education in Nigeria is as old as the Nigerian Society itself. The western education practiced in Nigeria began in a formal classroom setting. Therefore, the importance of classroom in any educational level cannot be over-emphasized. Hence, the need for curriculum planning and lesson preparation for any level of education to take into consideration certain factors within the classroom environment (Nwankwo, 2023).

However, a class is not just a four-wall enclosure with sitting arrangement and a chalk-board, but a structure which houses the teacher, learners and teaching-learning facilities which have to be properly harnessed for the realization of set objectives (Ekpo, 2022). Thus, the classroom provides an effective platform for the acquisition of knowledge and the shaping of attitudes towards learning.

 

CLASS VARIABLES AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

The basic foundation for educational development and sustainable improvement in teaching standard and learning behavior is therefore best assured when the class environment is properly determined, monitored and managed (Ekere & Okon, 2016). In fact, management in classroom is geared towards controlling factors within the learning environment which may affect the quality and quantity of learning. In doing so, the teacher must always be conscious of the  fact that he is only teaching the content of the curriculum but he is moulding characters  and at the same time preparing his learners for a life-long task.

 

Indeed, at the classroom level, physical inadequacies include lack of adequate room space, learning pose problems that put learning at risk. Learners also come to the classroom with varying attitudinal and emotional dispositions.

An awareness of these differences among classmates in intellectual ability, behavioural and attitudinal dispositions is of paramount important to the teacher. Such awareness is helpful in shaping what the teacher does at a particular point in time in order to carry all members of the class along in the teaching-learning process regardless of their individual differences (Lassa (2023).

 

Moreover, the teacher’s class control is vital in shaping learners’ attitude towards learning. Thus, a class which has a tense, hostile, unfriendly atmosphere does not allow effect learning to take place. Class variables and students academic performance in agricultural science.

However, in a class where the teacher has no control, and does not provide any direction or good leadership to ensure that the learning environment is conducive, students behave in any way they like. They chose to go according to their own desires instead of environment the picture is difference. Students behave as expected because the teacher provides guidance on how the class should behave and indicates limits on the behaviours of the class. For a teacher to create and maintain a good classroom atmosphere is not an easy takes since many factors come together to determine the success of the class.

 

1.2           Statement of the Problem

Without reservation, it has been observed with dismay the decline in the level of academic achievement among students in schools. Moreover, the realization of set goals and objectives in the teaching-learning process has been marred by many factors within the school system.

Undeniably, the abysmal performance of students in the different school subjects has become a recurring decimal. It is incontestable that some factors within the classroom environment can influence the quality of instruction as well as teaching and learning outcomes.

However, there is no doubt that identifying and possibly controlling these factors will help to improve students’ learning behaviours and academic achievement. It is against this background therefore, that this study “Class Variables and Students’ Academic Performance in Agricultural Science in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area” becomes imperative.

 

1.3   Purpose of the Study

The main objective of this study was to examine Class Variables and Students’ Academic Performance in Agricultural Science. Specifically, specific objectives include to:

(i)     examine class size and Students’ Academic Performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary schools.

(ii)    examine Class facilities and Students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools.

(iii)    examine class management and Students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools.

 

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions were raised in line with the specific objectives of the study.

(i)     To what extent is the relationship between class size and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools?

(ii)    To what extent is the relationship between class facilities and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools?

(iii)    To what extent is the relationship between class management and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in secondary schools?

 

1.5   Research Hypotheses 

The following null hypotheses were formulated in line with the specific objectives to give the study a guide.

H01: There is no significant relationship between class size and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools.

H02: There is no significant relationship between class facilities and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools.

 

H03: There is no significant relationship between class management and students’ academic performance in Agricultural Science in Secondary Schools.

 

1.6   Significant of the Study

Teachers, curriculum planners, school administrators, researchers and students will benefits in the following ways:

(i)     Firstly, it would reveal the class variables which have a way of influence students’ academic performance in agricultural science in the study area.

(ii)    Secondly, it would provide adequate information to teachers on classroom management strategies for improved students’ academic achievement. Class variables and students academic performance in agricultural science.

(iii)    Furthermore, it would contribute to the body of existing knowledge and literature on class variables and students’ academic performance in schools.

(iv)   Finally, it would serve as a spring-board and reference materials for further research on class variables and students’ academic performance not only in Agricultural science but other school subjects.

 

 1.7   Limitation of the Study   

The major factors that limit the scope this study to Makpt Enin Local Government Area include:

(i)     Insufficient funds.

(ii)    The researcher’s academic work-Load

(iii)    The time frame for the completion of the research and submission of findings.

 

Definition of Term

The following terms used in this study were operationally defined by the researcher as given below:

Class: A group learners.

Classroom: In brief, a four-wall enclosure with an organized seats arrangement and a chalkboard for teaching and learning processes.

Variables: Factors within the class setting which could influence the teaching-learning process.

 

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that class variables (class size, class facilities, and class management) significantly influenced students’ academic performance in Agricultural science in the study area.
