INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background of the Study

Obviously, the government has introduced Education Sector Reforms (ESR) and National plan of action 2001-2015 for improvement of quality of education through improving the states of various resources inputs like revision of curricula, teacher training and provision of better facilities in the public schools. Secondary schools not only occupy a strategic place in the educational system in Nigeria, it is also the link between the primary and the university levels of education.

Furthermore, according to Ashikai (2023), education at secondary schools level is supposed to be the bedrock and the foundation towards higher knowledge in tertiary institutions. It is on investment as well as an instrument that can be used to achieve a more rapid economic, social, political, technological, scientific and cultural development in a country.

However, it is rather unfortunate that the secondary schools today are not measuring up to standard expected of them. Undeniably, there has been public outcry over the persistently poor performance of secondary school students in public examinations.

Meanwhile, according to Nwokocha and Amadike (2021) academic performance of students is the yardstick for testing educational quality of a performance in internal and mostly external examination. However, studies have found out that school environment, instructional method and resources, class size and teacher effectiveness are all variables that affect students’ academic performance. Evidently, according to report, class size is a very serious factor that affects students’ academic performance in secondary school. In addition, Jeremy (2010) opined that class size is the number of students in a classroom daily with a teacher for teaching and learning.

In fact, the number of students in the classroom shapes classroom management, amount of attention given to each student’s instructional method and instructional materials to be used in teaching and learning of given content.

Moreover, Bayo (2023) opined that smaller classes benefit all students became of individual attention from teachers but low-attaining students benefit more at the secondary school level. Students in large class drift off task because of too much instruction from the teacher to the students instead of individual attention, and low attaining students are most affected. Students benefit in later grade from being in small class during early grades.

Longer periods in small classes resulted in more increases in achievement in later grades for all students. Therefore, based on this background, the research examines class size and academic performance of secondary school students in Government.

1.2   Statement of the problem

As school population increase class size also increase, and the student academic performance has been affected. Moreover, class size has become a phenomenon often mentioned in the educational literature as an influence on student feelings and achievement, on administration, quality and school budgets.

Indeed, class size is almost an administrative decision over which teachers have little or no control. However, most researcher starts from the assumption that size of the class would prove a significant determinant of the degree of success of students. In fact, with the exception of a few, many studies have reported that under ideal situation, class size itself appears to be an important factor, the first issue that calls for immediate clarification is what number of students should constitute a large class and what should be described as a small class? Hence, in describing a small class, the researcher observed that they have few numbers of students offer limited range of subjects and their students lack competition and interest with relatively few peers.

Large class size on the other hand is often have large number of students, having broader curricula with teacher being given wider support while  students may suffer discipline problems as teachers cannot get to know their students very easily.

In addition, in terms of numerical strength, the National Policy on Education (1977) revised in (1981) specified 20 in pre-primary and maximum of the secondary schools. These directives appear unrealistic in urban areas as a result of high population and Government policy of free and compulsory education in Akwa Ibom State.

Therefore, considering the vitality of the problem, this study examined class size and academic performance of secondary school students in Government.

1.3   Purpose of the study

The primary purpose of this study was to examine class size and academic performance of secondary school students in Government. Specifically, the study examined:

• The relationship between students-teacher ratio and academic performance of students in Government.
• The relationship between large class size and academic performance in Government.
• The relationship between small class size and academic performance in Government.

 1.4   Research Questions

• How does students-teachers ratio influence students academic performance in Government?
• To what extent does large class size affect students academic performance in Government?
• How does small class size affect students academic performance in Government?

1.5   Significance of the study

                This study will be important in the following ways:

• Firstly, the findings will help teachers to understand the influence of class size on academic performance of students.
• Secondly, it will provide comprehensive information for educational planners, educationists and parent on how they can assist students to learn in large classes. Class size and academic performance of secondary school students in Government.
• In addition, it will serve as a contribution to knowledge in the subject area. Thus, in this regard, it will be useful for other researcher who might want to carry out research in related area.

1.6   Limitation of the study

                The study was limited by the following factors:

• Lack of Finance: During the study, the researcher could hardly have enough money to extend the research to other areas, to bought relevance literature on the study, to print questionnaire and the report of this study. Hence, the researcher resorts to borrowing.
• Time Factor: Also, the time given for the study was inadequate for wider study. This made the researcher to choose survey research design for the study, since survey instrument can be used to gather a lot of information in a short time.
• Geography Factor: Lastly, the study was concentrated in selected five (5) public secondary school in the study area out of ten (10) public secondary school in the area.

Operational definition of terms

(i)    Class Size: In brief, it is the number of students learning in a particular at a given time.

(ii)   Academic Performance: In brief, it is the outcome of a teaching learning process.

(iii)  Government: It is a school subject taught in the senior secondary classes to develop students’ knowledge, attitude and skills toward government.
