INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Undeniably, comparing science and art involve systematic observation of the similarities or dissimilarities between two or more branches of subject of study. Despite the global innovation in science and art for easy learning and mastering of any subject.

Robbin (2018) reports that the statistics released by the Federal Ministry of Education on student’s poor performance in Mathematics teaching today still follows traditional pattern.

Enukoha (2016) reports that in schools where Mathematics is taught students even go to the extent of avoiding their class when it is time for the subject, others stay just because they want the teacher to see that they were in the class while several others adapt to the situation because they have no option at their disposal, while some students stay in the class to fulfill all righteousness.

Moreover, the period for teaching and learning Mathematics should be the moment learners look forward to their study. Akpabio (2020) stated that the period for teaching and learning Mathematics should be a moment for relaxation and recreation while learners are learning for the sake of perfection in Mathematics.

However, majority of Nigerian students dread Mathematics and most of them consider it difficult, complex and abstract. Worse still, many students do not immediately see the use of work why they should be troubled with the study of the subject except as a requirement for admission into institutions of higher learning. Unless students are exposed to many uses of Mathematics and of Mathematical knowledge, students may never come close to realizing it.

 

Considering that most people (students inclusive) find it difficult to give time and attention to anything they have not seen the value that would be derived from it. Some students may only be paying lip service to the study of Mathematics if teachers if teachers do not make to them the importance of Mathematics knowledge. Their focus will then be on acquiring a good grade in the subject in the subject at the end of their secondary school. Even some students spent more of their time in reading literature textbook.

Agha (2018) also report that the problem of students is that they read science just the way they read art. Further, art subjects can be read comfortably when lying on the bed not with science. A comparative study of performance of science and art students in mathematics in secondary schools.

Book publishers are primarily interested in the marketability of their textbooks and they go all out to achieve this objective (Ebong, 2019). He further said that some textbooks lack adequate coverage especially that of the senior secondary school topic. Some of these textbooks also lack adequate illustrative examples and disregard the sequential preparation of topics which especially are required in a subject like Mathematics.

 

Ebong (2019) maintains that the environment must be conducive enough and students must be ready to learn. He also concluded that all things being equal, conducive learning environment stimulates student’s interest to learn and often result in high academic achievement. Anwara (2014) stated that Mathematics is made easy in all cases for a teacher who understands the subject very well.

However, a well trained and qualified professional teacher will always motivate and inspire his or her academic excellent.

Operant conditioning theory states that strengthened the desire response. It also states about the procedure which increases the probability that any given response will be repeated. But classical condition is good for developing good habits and positive attitude towards learning in general and to a particular subject.

Therefore, based on this background, this study focus a comparative study of performance of science and art students in mathematics in secondary schools.

 

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Without reservation, students are supposed to put more effort in solving Mathematics knowing fully well that the subject is the bedrock of any endeavour in pure science, applied science management science and even in art courses.

However, Uffort (2021) stated that one cannot avoid observing the utilitarian aspect of Mathematics being preparative ground for students for useful living. Specifically, counting adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are some simple and useful fundamental processes of Mathematics which have not an increasing practical value in life.

Indeed, Mathematics has a vital role to play in natural and applied science. Therefore, this study focus a comparative study of performance of science and art students in mathematics in secondary schools.

 

1.3  Objectives of the Study

The main purpose of this study focus a comparative study of performance of science and art students in mathematics in secondary schools. Specifically, the study was design to ascertain:

  1. the difference in the academic performance of science and art students in mathematics.
  2. the difference in the academic performance of science and art students in mathematics according to gender.

 

1.4  Significance of the Study

This work will be significant to numerous people including:

Firstly, it will enable the mathematics teachers to realize the need of using appropriate methods of teaching in other to help the students to improve their performance in mathematics. A comparative study of performance of science and art students in mathematics in secondary schools.

Secondly, it will enable government through the Ministry of Education to appreciate the need of giving approval for the textbook to be used of by schools, for the purpose of covering the examination syllabus.

 

It will enable parents to know the performance of their children in school before the examination and what they should do to help their children perform better.

Furthermore, it will help students study hard and to know each other in the class what they should do to improve their performance in test or examination.

Finally, it will serve as the reference point to other researcher on the some study or related study.

 

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were formulated for the study:

  1. There is no significant difference in academic performance of science and art students in mathematics.
  2. There is no significant difference in academic performance of science and art students in mathematics according to gender.

 

1.6 Limitation of the Study

This study encountered with a number of difficulties. Firstly, time given for the completion of the study was inadequate and this hindered the research work from having a wider scope. Also, financial constraint hindered the work because the researcher found it difficult to get some funds to finance the study.

 

Definition of Terms

Academic Performance: This is the outcome of education, the extent to which a student, teachers or institution has achieved their educational goal.

Science: Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the national and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. It is also a systematic and logical approach to discovering how things in the universe work.

Art: Is the subject of study primarily concerned with human creativity and social life such as languages, literature and history.

 

Conclusion

This study shows the academic performance of science and art students in Mathematics. However, based on the research questions and hypotheses of this study; the following conclusions were drawn were made:

  1. There is a significant difference in academic performance of science and art students in Mathematics.
  2. There is a significant difference in the performance of male and female students in Mathematics.
